My assumption is that water cannot flow through these blocks yet, but by removing the vertical water textures, these air-filled blocks are disguised to be underwater.

I have to admit that I also happened to me, but placing the magma block, in fact the oxygen and the bubble columns was present, but the water graphic no and was positioned even in random areas where it could not go for the rule of the hole below the level and water that goes there for sure.
Seems to be a problem again in 18w22b: MC-130493
Now MC-130486.
Perhaps a more general title should be given to this report about all graphical glitches with the new water?
