Definitely not WAI, as you can't see the item. That's an issue. If it's way too low, and you can't tell what it is, it is an error.

I think this is due to the egg being small within the box for items. Its also low in the inventory lot. Same happens to mushrooms which are also low in the slow thus low in the hand. Thing is if you view yourself from the outside they connect to your hand. If they would put the item higher it would float. As such, I don't think its a bug but rather by design.
