I placed two chests next to each other and they didn't join.
I'm including a video.

Confirmed in 18w08b.
In previous versions it was possible to connect chests like this (although it always seemed a bit like it's not supposed to work like that).
Pressing shift and placing the chest doesn't connect them either.
This will make it difficult to make a wall of chests of which you only see the end. "difficult" may be a little strong but it will require changing the way I build them. BTW, this is how many storage systems have their chests constructed (from the end of the chest).
IMHO, previous behavior made sense. My mental model is that placing two chests together would join them.
I found that while standing in front of a chest the chests join if you place a new chest on the floor, they join. But if you shift click on the ground they do not join.
I have also just successfully placed two double chests right next to each other along their long side. It seems to be possible along any of the sides. Although I'd like to be able to place two chests (no trapped chests involved) together, I'm not sure that is desired behavior.
This is how it is supposed to work (as of 1.13).

As seen in MC-125707, this kinda broke the dungeon chests too.
In 1.13, chests don't connect if you place them that way. You need to place them next to each other. (Or, alternatively, you should be able hold shift and right click on the side of the chest you want to connect the new chest to, but I've not tried whether that works in this case)
