Render resolution exceeds window dimensions on some macOS systems, causing performance issues

When I run the Snapshots for MC Java Edition 1.13 I get a fullscreen resolution of 3360x2100. My Mac has a screen resolution of 2880 x 1800. Because of this, my computer runs very hard when playing the snapshot. Heats up quite quickly (which isn't normal) fans are going like crazy, my FPS drops easily below 50 (Normally get around 60 on 1.12) and the game becomes VERY VERY laggy whenever I place any blocks or break blocks.

The screen resolution issue is due to Minecraft now using the retina MacBook's resolution (see MC-32327). Just curious, did you use a custom size resolution? (System Preferences --> Display --> Resolution).

Also, you're using a different version of Java in the screenshots than what is reported in the environment tab.

Ah yes, I had taken that picture when I first reported it, but I had updated the information when I updated Java, hoping that may fix the issue.

My MacBook Pro is set to the custom size resolution 1 RIGHT of the default one. "Looks like 1680x1050"

I tried to do a screen recording with Quicktime, but as soon as I changed the resolution in the game (from default) the game minimized into the dock, and it stopped the screen recording

using that setting changes the monitor's resolution from the native

I don't quite understand why mojang changed MineCraft to run on macs using their retina screen size?

I mean, I get the retina screen size, but the actual pixels on my screen are not matching the retina size.

To me it would make sense for DEFAULT to = the real resolution of the screen, and for players to be able to change their resolution higher or lower depending on their liking.

Yes I have my retina settings to a scaled option. but when I have MineCraft open on my screen it looks like its set for a 50" TV screen. Plus I am having issues with changing the resolution and it crashing.

Hence why I suggest that you guys change it back, so the default matches the actual pixels of the mac's screen

OH also Like I said, in my macs settings I have set my screen resolution to the one that says "Looks like 1680x1050" but why Is MineCraft showing a resolution of  3360x2100 ... I do not understand where that number is coming from. Its literally 4 times the size of my current screen resolution

I'm posting to echo the concerns raised here.

Since 1.13, the change in behaviour has caused a dramatic performance regression on virtually all systems using a Retina display, for little perceived benefit. Forcing the entire system to use a lower resolution (read: using RDM) is a non-starter. An option for the old behaviour, via a toggle or similar, would be vastly preferable.

Confirmed in Minecraft 1.17

Game runs at 3840x2440 (on a 2880x1800 display)

Additional information:

causes awful performance on the new versions of Minecraft on Intel Macbooks. (since 1.13 according to the issue?) Game runs at 3840 x 2440 (on my 2880 x 1800 screen). - Not able to adjust it whatsoever through settings. - Fullscreen mode does not work on Mac, so the setting does not work either. - No option to run in "Low Resolution Mode" (non-Retina) because of the Minecraft launcher. FPS of the game is almost unplayable compared to older versions. If anyone at Mojang has a Mac, they can see for themselves how bad the issue is with 1.17.

Hi, I have this issue too. Please show that you care about macOS, you've ignored many macOS-only bugs that make the game unusable eg. MC-121772.

As per my comment on MC-156077, I was personally unable to repro in 24w03b while the reporter was, so it seems only certain systems are affected.
