Elytra can be repeatedly used on flat ground to gain speed

While jumping on flat ground, a player can activate their elytra right before they touch the ground, allowing them to then leap forward with extra momentum from the momentary glide. This process can be repeated to create a very bizarre-looking form of "bunny-hopping".

Since 1.15, players can activate elytra while jumping upward, making this movement even easier to perform. It's unclear whether this kind of movement  with elytra on flat ground is intended.

Not a bug. works as intended.

We can't know that for sure until a dev confirms it with that resolution. I'm rather hoping this isn't intended.

This has somewhat been fix, going the opposite way.
There was a glitch where you couldn't open Elytra while having upward velocity. So in X snapshot for 1.15 you can open it much sooner.

So i'll say like Paul, this works as intended.
How would start flying if you couldn't even open your Elytra while on flat groud?

Can confirm in 1.16.5 and 21w08b.

Can confirm in 23w46a.
Although, this seems to be closer to expected behavior than not due to the inherit behavior of elytra flight currently.
