Entities and some blocks are visible through particles

I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but when eating, some entities and chests/signs are visible through the food particles. Most blocks are hidden by the particles given off, but mobs, chest, and signs are not. The food particles are behind them as though they were in front of the particles. I am using Optifine, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
