Comparators not completely registering inventories through blocks

Redstone comparators are only registering full inventories through blocks when placed opposite containers. Expected results: comparators would register inventories adjacent to blocks. Screenshot attached. Unintended side effect: redstone signals can now be "crossed" through a block (see screenshots 2 & 3)
