Soul Sand and Magma Blocks not creating bubble columns

I tried to make a water elevator going up and down with soul sand and magma blocks, but I can't get the bubble columns to appear.
I placed the water first, so there weren't neighboring air blocks? and I tried having a thinner and wider water column (now it's 3x3), but nothing works.
