Cannot place redstone on the side of blocks

I am trying to build an arrow-filled dispenser based contraption using redstone. However, when I tried to place redstone dust on the wood planks of my house, It didn't appear to have placed any. I really want to equip redstone based contraptions on (and near) my house, so this is a big issue for me.

UPDATE: Applies for all walls

Done, and I just updated the description because I tried it on a stone wall and it didn't work either.

I have tried to place redstone dust on the side of wood planks and on the side of stone.

Redstone dust can only be placed ontop of blocks, not on the side.
