Mending Not Functioning

Simply, after playing for a bit I killed multiple things in survival mode and I had mending on my sword which was in my hand I had nothing else in my off hand, and all my armor had mending on it, and after killing mobs and collecting there XP holding my sword it wasn't repaired at all and my armor had no repair to it either.
