Baby chickens moving from water to land drown/suffocate

Sometimes, when a baby chicken is swimming in a water block, and moves to a solid block at the same height (ie, at surface level, short enough for the player to get up with one jump), the baby chicken will begin to take damage as if suffocating, and dies. I don't know how to determine whether it was actually suffocation damage.

Update: Sometimes this happens in just shallow water. No land needed. See attached video.
