When I'm playing on my server, after going a few chunks, the chunks stop loading. It happens sooner for my sister, who's on a slower computer. Rejoining the server makes the chunks load, but it happens again when I go further.

Have you tried setting your view distance higher than the server's view_distance value (it defaults to 10) and relogging?
If in doubt, set it to maximum, exit and enter again the server. Run some distance and see if the world loads.

It didn't hang. I was able to get out of the unloaded chunks.
