Hostile mobs will sometimes stop attacking/following their target when directly next to it

The bug

Hostile mobs attack players, villagers and iron golems normally, but sometimes they will just stop following the player for about a second. Sometimes it will stay next to the player if the player stays still. A video evidence and screenshot shown as proof.

These are the mobs I know so far who will sometimes stop attacking you for 1 second and staying next to you. Rest of them seems to work normally:

  • Vindicators

  • Zombified Piglins

  • Zombies/Zombie Villagers/Husks/Drowned

  • Endermen

  • Wither Skeletons

  • Silverfish

  • Endermites

  • Dolphins

(This relates to the latest report I just created: MC-148243)

Is duplicated by MC-158759. Confirmed in 19w45b

Orbic

Can confirm, and here's a list of more mobs I found with this issue:

-Pandas, especially when it's a grumpy one

-Hoglins

-Piglins

-Zombified Piglins

-Wither Skeletons

-Silverfish

-Endermites

-Wolves

The only two I'm unsure of are Vexes and Dolphins. Vexes wait a while before attacking but considering they float around and spawn it groups this may be intentional. Dolphin attacks seem bugged as a whole, They'll carry on as usual and then attack you.. sometimes. But prioritize even idle movement over it.

Also seems to happen with Spiders sometimes, when you hit them

Some mobs like Endermen and Baby Zombies sometimes do a weird back-and-forth run when they stop "idling" and try to attack the player again

Piglins, hoglins and zoglins aren't affected

Orbic

I tested again just now in 20w19a to see, and yes, Piglins, Hoglins and Zoglins are no longer affected. In fact, neither are Pandas, and Wolves. They've somehow.. stopped doing this. Don't know what could possibly cause that, but now the list is:

-Vindicators

-Zombified Piglins

-Zombies/Zombie Villagers/Husks/Drowned

-Endermen

-Wither Skeletons

-Silverfish

-Endermites

-Dolphins

I still can't confirm for spiders or cave spiders doing this. Perhaps MC-49129 is being mistaken for this bug.

Thanks Orbic! The list has been updated to the specific mobs that still has the issue.

I can't reproduce for spiders either anymore. Maybe I did mistake it for that, I don't know.

At least Baby Zombies still do this, and even adult Zombies sometimes

galaxy_2alex

Not fully resolved, as can be seen in MC-184710 and MC-184758 - though it does seem to affect less mobs now.

These videos demonstrate the issue with normal zombies and baby zombies:

This video gives a much better example. The baby zombie and vindicator are faster than the players backward walking speed. When they catch up to me and attempt to hit me, they fail to because they stop moving before they get close enough to hit me. https://streamable.com/hph3g1

The issue shown in the latest comments is a different issue than this bug. It's potentially MC-2310 or it's a different issue.

Resolving this one again.
