[MC-149171] when i click on my frineds realm it asks me if i want to buy one and wont let me join

my friend bought a realms and we cant play together cause it wont let me join. it asks me to buy a subscription, but i thought the entire advertising for realms was that only the owner needs to pay, so why cant i join?

Similar issue here, except I noticed it after trying to leave a zombie realm (= offline for more than a year), but it failed to remove it from my list, and ruthlessly removed an active one instead.
Now when I click on the remaining zombie one, bam same message.
