Temporary Workaround
1. Click on the realm
2. Click anywhere outside of the "Buy a Realm" box
3. Go to fullscreen if you're playing in windows mode, or vice versa (F11). This will make the options split again.
4. Click on the realm again
5. Click on the "buy a realm" again
6. The play button should be click-able now
Whenever i try to join my friend's realm it opens the menu to buy a realm, whatever I do it opens that menu and i cant join his realm. i tried reloading the game and it is still happening

i am sorry, but this is Not a duplicate of that. i can open the realms menu, it says for me to buy a realm when i join
All my friends did what Tony Von Reis did and it helped us to get them Logged in, they did this:
i marked the realm in small window , then i max sized window , then click "play" instead of "leave" , i think i did like that to start play

I came here looking to see if anyone else was having this issue. I am the host of the realms and my friends are having the same issue as stated above. Except, they can't click on either of the two realms I purchased, not just the first Realm on their list. My version is Java for Windows. Theirs is Java for Mac.
I told them about the work around but it only worked for one of them and ended up loading a different world from the one I had selected as the host. The weird part was I was already in the Realm in the world I had selected. It was on my friends Mac. So I don't have anything to show so I hope my description was efficient enough.
For the fix to take effect, you will need to restart the game, and maybe the launcher as well. Once the game starts again, it should download a new version of Minecraft Realms which no longer has this issue.
I play on a Mac (10.14.3) and the issue is NOT resolved (April 25 7:40 EDT). When I select REALMS a large box obscures the game selection. I CANNOT get it to "click outside the box" . The obscuring window will not go away. Even when I use tab to move between selections, I cannot get the ongoing game to get selected, so PLAY never becomes active.
I'm sorry to hear that Ronald. Can you please verify that you are using realms 1.14.13 by looking in the log?
If this is the case, this popup depends a lot on your account status. Things like if you have purchased realms, a realms trial or neither, if you have your own realms created or they are yet to be created, if you are invited to other realms and so forth.
