Fire Spreading Causing Lag Spikes/FPS drops

When fire spreads, framerate begins to drop tremendously. It seems that the bigger the spread, the more framerate drops/lag spikes occur.

My framerate is normally in the mid 300's and at best can go up to 500. The framerate drops to the high 100's and at worst to sub 100.
