Big Trees do not grow if there is snow or grass around it.

I had a survival world and was trying to grow big spruce trees. I went through a lot of bonemeal trying to grow it. I removed the snow around it and it grew in less than a minute. I did testing on my creative server and big spruce and jungle trees do not grow if there is grass or snow layers around it.
