The Bug:
Two-by-two arrangements of jungle or spruce saplings cannot grow when surrounded by any block other than a sapling that's located to the north and/or west side of the sapling formation.
This can be anything from a torch to a snow layer, to a grass block. The south and east sides do not have this blocking effect.
Steps to Reproduce:
Build the setup as shown in the attachment below.
Apply large amounts of bone meal to the said saplings.
Take note as to whether or not two-by-two arrangements of jungle or spruce saplings cannot grow when there are adjacent blocks located north or west of the sapling formation.
Observed Behavior:
The saplings will never grow into trees naturally or when bone mealed.
Expected Behavior:
The saplings would grow into trees and not be prevented by adjacent blocks located north or west of the sapling formation.

Unable to reproduce. Are you sure you give them enough space to grow?

Unable to reproduce either. If it still occurs, take screenshots and create a new ticket with them.

glad you guys gave me 4 hours to respond...
anyway I found the issue, please reopen

There may not be any blocks adjacent to the north-western sapling, as this is considered as the center of the tree. More information can be found here..

okay so why does this work with just a single sappling?

Because a single sapling center block isn't on the north-western side.

Why exactly is this marked WAI? I don't see any devs explicitly confirming that this is intended.
Also, if we assume WAI, why doesn't dark oak have this restriction?

My report about they not being able to grow next to carpets has been marked as a duplication of this, and there's no relation considering this started to happen only in recent versions.
I don't see how this can be marked as intended either, considering dark oak trees and 1x1 trees of all kinds grow with no problem.

It can not even handle if you have a grid of saplings (like say 8x8) or 2x2 tree to close (less an 6 block apart).
This in 1.16.1 singelplayer, newgen world
Hi! I'd like to request ownership of this report.

Can confirm for 1.16.3rc1
Can confirm in 20w48a.
Can confirm in 21w05b.

Still an issue in 1.17.1. I'd like to add that single-sapling trees of any kind will grow just fine in snow-covered places, it's just 2x2 spruce and jungle trees that can't. 2x2 dark oak does work, however.

Can confirm in 21w38a.
Can confirm this in 21w39a. Here are some extra details regarding this problem.
The Bug:
2x2 arrangements of jungle or spruce saplings cannot grow into trees if surrounded by snow.
Steps to Reproduce:
Build the setup as shown in the attachment below.
Apply large amounts of bone meal to either the spruce or jungle saplings.
Observed Behavior:
2x2 arrangements of jungle or spruce saplings cannot grow into trees if surrounded by snow.
Expected Behavior:
2x2 arrangements of jungle or spruce saplings would be able to grow into trees even when surrounded by snow.

Can confirm in 1.19 Prerelease 2.

Can confirm in 1.19 Pre-release 3.

Can confirm in 1.19 RC1.

It's probably worth noting that this extends to basically any block occupying the same space, including ones which are completely transparent like grass or ferns. I suspect this is probably to keep the giant spruce trees with leaves on the bottom level from intersecting any blocks, but spruce saplings are ignored in that check anyway so I don't see why that couldn't be extended to include other blocks.

I also noticed that adjacent blocks are only blocking tree growth from the north and west side of the sapling formation, but not the east or south. So it doesn't have to be fully surrounded. It also doesn't matter which sapling gets applied the bone meal, all saplings in the 2x2 formation behave as if they were one single sapling with 12 adjacent sides instead of 8.
@unknown, I believe that issue is MC-118980.
