Growth of 2x2 jungle and spruce trees is blocked by blocks next to saplings

Any block (except air, dirt, log or leaves), when placed on top of the 5 blocks marked red in the screenshot (negative X/Z) will block growth of 2x2 jungle and spruce trees. Does not affect 2x2 dark oak or any of the 1 block trees.
