Here we are almost year later and it's still happening? Yes it seems exp orbs are hidden somewhere. Now I was able to get some when moved closer to wall. Of course many people will build grindstone close to a wall when built indoors!

Yup, the XP is consistently being emitted behind the grindstone (which in my case was actually against a glass pane).  I've now hung it from the ceiling, let's see if that helps next time.
