We finally tracked this down on our servers - completely unmodded servers and clients are experiencing this issue (duplicate of #MC-984), and it only happens when you login near an active beacon block.
Hmm i think your using a hacking client, as packet id 244 refers to block breaking and renderparticle, and i never saw an autojoin button on vanilla.
Yeah, on other servers we can crash clients on command by sending an invalid block ID, troll level master. But this server we deliberately keep vanilla until a stable Bukkit comes out... and I am the mod, so if anyone's trolling me it's Jeb. Don't focus too much on the 244- the packet IDs are random, and more often than not they'll be unused IDs.
What version is the server on?
