End Gateway teleports me into the void when trying to return to the main island

I have an 11 x 11 platform surround both my End gateway on the main island and the exit point. When using an ender pearl on the exit point to return, I get ported onto the platform at the exit point repeatedly unless I aim the ender pearl at either the top or bottom bedrock surrounding the end gateway. Then I get teleported below my platform on the main end island and fall into the void. It even seems as though I am teleported outside of the 11 x 11 area.
