Block Break Texture

So i was just playing like normal and i needed to collect some wood. I went up to my tree with a stone axe and began gathering wood. however to get the rest of the tree i went underneath the log blocks and look up AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE (not like 110 degrees) and ya know the black squares that spread out from the center. DID NOT APPEAR. I could not find a suitable picture because it looks like im not axing. i dont think a crash report would help.
