When I upgraded my map from level 2 to level 3 on a crafting table, it caused the map to become blank, I have tried reopening the world but that did not help.

When upgrading the map when the player is off the map, it results in the map turning blank.

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-883, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
However, that ticket has already been resolved. Depending on the resolution, that can mean that it either will be fixed in the next version, or that it is not considered a bug and won't be fixed.
