I was messing around with bee hives and bee nests. I tried placing a nest and completely blocking it off and summoning a bee to see if it would enter. To my surprise, it ignored all the blocks around the nest and entered anyway.
It's really easy to recreate:
Place a hive or nest;
On each face of the hive/nest put a block (e.g. stone);
Place a flower near the hive/nest;
Summon a bee.

Can confirm. This most likely happens because the bees just need to enter the 3x3x3 area around the bee hive/nest in order to enter it.
