If player dies in lava/fire, player will still be on fire after death but the fire will not affect player. Water does not smother fire.

If a player dies in fire or lava, the player will still be on fire when they respawn but the fire will not hurt them. If the player goes into rain or water, the fire will not be smothered and a repeated and very loud fire-smother sound will be played until the player steps out of the rain or water, or until the player dies again, when the fire will be extinguished.
