If no entities currently exist in loaded chunks, all types of chests will become transparent. If any type of entity is rendered, however, they will return to normal. This applies to double and single normal and trapped chests along with ender chests. This is best seen in a void world. You can see this happening in the pictures provided below.
Edit: This was in a brand new world, not modded or anything. And even without the texture pack I was using, this was still happening.

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-161831, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
