Animals trapped in the Nether

Animals can easily pass through Nether Portals (unfortunately it seems like they are TRYING to be stuck there) from the Overworld, but once they pass through it is impossible for them to return. I currently have two horses and three dogs trapped there. This happens on my single player and multiplayer.
