When a barrier block is viewed in the inventory, the hotbar, or an item frame, the barrier has a square, black background around it. This may be considered inconsistent with all the other block textures, and is also not shown as a block form.

We're actually already tracking this issue in MC-163001, so I resolved and linked this ticket as a duplicate.
