During my playthrough of the new nether update and the addition of striders, I was excited to jump right into the new content. However, upon my friend joining my SMP and dying (to me),
he said that he couldn't move and that he could hit himself. We investigated further and it turned out to be a very strange softlock. He could break 1-tick-blocks like slime blocks and torches and redstone, but he could not break dirt. He could not take damage from lava or bows, and I could not hit him. Video linked below. The issue was only solved by reverting to the previous snapshot.

The issue duplicates MC-175988 and is currently planned fixed for a future version.
had the same issue in singleplayer. I recorded it here:

What appears to be happening is that the player does not have control over editing the world such as placing or breaking blocks, and the blocks are reverted to their original state because the glitch makes the character invalid and is supposed to be dead. and once the player relogs the character officially dies, then the soft lock occurs and the character is being treated as a separate entity and cannot walk or break etc. In a separate test (not recorded) the player could still scroll through the hotbar and put items into their hot bar and hold them.
