As they are made out of stone and cobblestone respectively this doesn't make sense, especially when the stone pressure plate requires a pickaxe.

Applying to some other similar issues, I'd somehow think that the idea is not to break the item, per se, but simply to detach it (whatever "glue" was used to attach it to the surface), and thus, the tool (or no tool at all) wouldn't matter. That is, whether a button (or other detachable non-full-block item) is made of wood, stone or even diamond, should not affect its removal process.
However, I have no idea if there is any consistency for such behaviors either way so far... If majority of items already need a tool of proper material, then I would go with the same for buttons etc., just for consistency.
