My sister and I just converted from playing MCPE to java on our macs. I play on a Mac while my sister plays on her MacBook.
The main issue is that whenever I create a game and open to LAN, she can't seem to find me in multiplayer. However, whenever SHE makes a game and turns on a LAN connection, I can see her.
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to computer stuff, and I would really love some help so I can download maps and let my sister play with me on them 🙂

Despite MC-98598, it is possible to play a LAN game between two Macs (no matter which Mac is hosting the LAN) by using the "Direct Connect" feature. Normally, to learn how to use features of Minecraft you would have to contact Mojang support, but since I know how to use it, I'll put instructions below.
You will need to know the IP address of the Mac that will host the LAN.
On the Mac that will host the LAN, open "System Preferences".
Click "Network".
From the list on the left, select "Wi-Fi".
On the right, beneath the button for turning Wi-Fi on and off, there will be small text that says "Wi-Fi is connected to <the name of your Wi-Fi network> and has the IP address <some numbers separated by periods>."
Write down that number, including the periods (except for the last period which is just there because of the end of the sentence).
Start a LAN game on the Mac that will host that LAN.
In chat, there was text that said "Local game hosted on port <some number>."
Write down that number.
On the Mac that will connect to the LAN, open Minecraft. Click "Multiplayer" and then "Direct Connect". Type the first number that you wrote down, then a colon (which looks like this ":"), and then the second number you wrote down. There should not be any spaces. Click "Join Server".
The LAN game starts.
