After mining some snow layers under a snow golem, the snow layers or block below got a texture overlay of different UI elements, and some of the snow particles also changed. After reloading textures my crafting book inside the inventory was replaced with the texture of a mob shadow (just a guess), and after going back to the title screen and back into the world, the book was completely white instead. All entity shadows also turned white when my inventory did.
