Map not generating from tables

When using crafting table or cartography table, after you put in the appropriate items, it does not generate a map to take it just remains blank.

You need to put a compass in the middle to create a map.

you need to put a compas in the middle in the crafting table, and the cartography table is to edit maps(make them bigger, lock them, etc) it doesn't make them. read the wiki!!! minecraft.gamepedia.com/
