The bug
Though this is in creative mode, compasses, recovery compasses and clocks are functional in tabs such as "Search Items" and "Tools" and "Saved Hotbars".
Probably intended, since these tabs are only present creative mode

Do believe this was actually added at some point but the wiki doesn't tell me anything.
Could be I just remember something that isn't a thing
I can confirm that this occurs in 20w22a. I agree that this is almost certainly intentional.
