Game Crashes when trying to go to the nether

When I enter the portal instead of taking me to the nether the game crashes out and I receive this error message

The game crashed whilst ticking player
Error: java.lang.NullPointerException: Ticking player

This is the only portal that I have tried in this world. Since this is hardcore and single player, I don't have a diamond pick yet. I was only able to get this broken portal that I found going.

I update java and the game still crashes, but it no longer gives me a crash report, just and apology.
