Gravel being deleted when falling into lava

Ive seen this mainly with gravel in the nether but, once made to fall into a certain depth of lava (both flowing and still) it despawns.

Are you sure it doesn't just fall on the bottom of the lake? Please note that gravel falling on soul sand will pop off, that is intentional.

Upon clearing it out, there was soul sand at the bottom. Thank you for the reply.
