The bug
Once a horse starts wandering to a random destination (all mobs do that), but is interrupted by the player that rides it away, it will try to get all the way back to its original destination, thus wandering hundreds of blocks depending how far the player rode it.
The bug
Let a saddled horse wander around
Once it picks up and starts wandering into a random direction mount it and ride it away
Get off the horse
Watch it going all the way back to its original destination

Unable to reproduce. Mobs generally wonder around randomly. Use leads, what else were those made for?
Found a way to reproduce:
When mounting a saddled horse that started to wander around and you ride it away, once you get off it, it will try to "finish" its pathfinding by going all the way back it wanted to go in the first place.
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
Confirmed for 1.13.2 and this is getting really annoying. I get off a horse and do something for 10 seconds, then come back only to see my horse either gone or 500 blocks away from where it was.
Confirmed not fixed for 1.16.5, happened to me for a while. Can't reproduce, Fixed by hitting horse, but then created another "Return" point.
Confirmed in 1.21.11, really needs fixing. Can’t get off my horse for just one second without it running off in a straight line.
