Won’t load friends screen

My boyfriend and I both created accounts through Xbox to play multiplayer together but I am unable to add friends. When selecting the add a friend button I am taken to a green screen with no options besides exit. He was able to find my account but I cannot accept his request or invite him to my worlds. We are both playing on IOS and everything has been updated. Our accounts are friends on the Xbox app but not on Minecraft PE. We tried to just play servers together but those are not loading for me either. He does not show up as a friend on my screen and I cannot invite him through Xbox when in a world. Both of our multiplayer settings are on and on friends of friends. I have tried deleting the app but the problem was still there.
