Redstone Clock with 1 Piston, 1 Observer, 1 Redstone

I placed 1 piston facing to the side or downwards, on top of the piston I placed the observer facing towards the piston, so it sees the piston, and on top of the observer I placed 1 redstonedust, so it gets powered by the observer each time the piston is changing. After placing a redstone block or a redstone torch (anything that powers the piston and then interrupt powering the piston) next to the piston and removing it I accidentally created a redstone clock which shouldn't even work... right? (Screenshot shows the construction step by step, only the redstone torch at the end needs to be removed to make the redstone clock work) You can even replace the redstone with a target to make it work but then it's just slower than before. So if I'm not mistaken nothing should happen, right? But something is happening that makes the redstone clock work. Hope this is enough.
