Apparently, the x and z axis do not relate between overworld and the nether. I created a portal in the nether to travel in a particular direction, and ended up creating a portal, in the over world, that appeared in the opposite direction.
never used to have this problem. i thought i had portals sussed.

Cannot confirm.
Build portal around 0, 0, stepped in
Portal in Nether was created around 0, 0
Build portal in Nether at 360, 0, stepped in
Portal in Overworld was created around 3000, 0 (~ 360 * 8, 0 * 8)
Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
I think the reporter is talking about the orientation of the portals, not their position. As such, it's probably a duplicate of MC-3.
How long's the distance between where you entered the nether and where you came back?
