when large sums of items are dropped from a broken chest, they appear gone but are invisible

I was throwing away items in chests such as rotten flesh from my gold farm, and I used fire charges after breaking the chest to burn the items. They were gone, or at least that's what I thought, and my inventory was full of the items I just burned. They were invisible.
