I have downloaded the minecraft launcher, but have no versions downloaded to play

I have downloaded, uninstalled, redownloaded and repaired the Minecraft Launcher. I keep getting the error "Sorry, unable to start Minecraft. Please check your configurations." I try to adjust the version but have no versions attached to the Minecraft Launcher. I don't have 1.16.2 or earlier versions. I cant locate any versions in the my system files. I haven't downloaded any third party clients and haven't been able to start a new world. Help.
