Died from 100 blocks height, all items but armour were where I died

I was building a sign up in the sky of the realm's world spawn and fell down to my death, luckily i respawned close by but all the items in my inventory including enchanted tools, wool and food had fanished on the floor- only the armour remains at the death point. The items did not burst out anywhere unseen since the death was on a flattened area.

What I expected to happen was...:
After falling to my death, i expected to pick up my things and carry on again

What actually happened was...:
I was only able to pickup my armour, the rest of the items are completely gone

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Build up using scaffolding to around 100 blocks high
2. Fail a jump at that height and plummet down
3. Check the death scene after respawning?
