Minecraft Crash when a game capture software is running (OpenGL)

When XSplit or OBS is running, Minecraft crashes when loading. If Minecraft is running and then I open XSplit or OBS, Minecraft have OpenGL errors and then crashes randomly (often after seconds or minutes, sometime never).

Investigation n°1 :

  • NVidia already worked on the subject and made a patch but it didn't work : https://community.xsplit.com/t/xsplit-and-minecraft-java-1-16/2101

  • The bug doesn't appear on below 1.16 version

  • There is no update able to fix it : neither Windows 10 Pro update or NVidia driver update

  • Running Minecraft on a never version of Java doesn't fix it

Investigation n°2 :

  • I tried to format my computer so I go on a clean setup.

  • I only installed Minecraft Java and XSplit (no driver). The crash still happens.

  • Updating NVidia drivers to the newest one doesn't fix it.

  • Everything is installed by default (No custom option, on C drive)

Windows : Windows 10 Pro (FR)

Processor : AMD Ryzen 9 3900X

GPU : NVidia RTX 2060

Commentary :

I really think it can be a strategic to solve this problem because some people who want to play to Minecraft on Twitch or YouTube can't because of that bug. Anyway I think some french Minecraft YouTuber like Aurelien_Sama have an RTX card and don't have the crash so maybe there is diff to make between their config and people like me.

Please explain how this is not an issue with those third party programs interfering with the game in the wrong way rather than an issue with the code the developers wrote.

First of all lucky you that I'm a developper so I can argue about this, someone with no training in computer science wouldn't be able to answer so you would close a ticket for a bug that is a real and is a real problem.

  • The game crashed with XSplit and with OBS so I suppose the problem is not between these softwares and Minecraft bug between the Windows libraries for video screen capture, used by both capture softwares, and Minecraft.

  • In the link given in the bug description an other guy has the same issue and provides Minecraft logs showing OpenGL errors so we need Mojang to get implied in this issue so we can undertand the problem deeper

  • The fact that the crash only happens since 1.16 would be enough as argument to make the topic considered as a bug introduced in 1.16 so Mojang has his part of responsability

No matter who between Mojang, NVidia and Microsoft will have to do a patch I not a developer of one of these teams I only can talk about the problem. Anyway the fact is crashed only since 1.16 means something evolved in Minecraft and that happens.

I'm available to provide more information, maybe there is a debug mode with enriched logs for you or something like that ?

Sorry, I forgot to mention this: The link in the description likely points to a non-public page and therefor is not accessible to me.

Furthermore, I do have some training in CompSci, and have also been working with this game for a long time, and this is not without precedent, albeit it previously happened with programs like Avast, Razer Synapse and a bunch of Malware ("it" being that the game works with the software in one version but not in the next). Also, Nvidia - for me - has a bad reputation when it comes to the Java Edition - they once released a driver to the public that just straight up did not work with the game, causing us months of headache for technical game support (that's more of a personal issue I have though).

If possible, please work all the information on that inaccessible page into this report - if there is information that is vital, but you would rather keep private, feel free to change the report's security to "Private" before adding the information.

Thank you for taking the time to explain - and I'll leave this open to let the developers decide on how to handle it.

Oh haha I see better now. Ok I edited my original post so the link is the good one.

Yes I saw that around 2017 they released a bad driver, this topic was very popular. But now it seems a bit different, even their last patch doesn't help

EDIT : I don't know if it can help but I added the msinfo32.nfo. I also tried to contact NVidia but they don't have an easy to access bug tracker like Mojang 😞

Please attach a crash report.

The crash report can found in [minecraft/crash-reports/crash-<DATE>-client.txt|https://minecrafthopper.net/help/guides/finding-minecraft-data-folder/]. If there is no applicable crash log, add the launcher log using these instructions to this ticket - please copy the log after the error has occurred.
