So there I was, celebrating that I successfully got a zombie villager in a 2 by 2 by 2 whole that he couldn't get out of. I put a nametag on the zombie villager just incase he wouldn't despawn. Once I cured him with a golden apple and weakness potion, I stayed near him as he was changing to a normal villager. After he switched to a villager, I put him inside my house where there was full light everywhere. I went to do a little farming and when I came back he was missing and nowhere to be found.

well, villagers can't despawn but they will disappear from time to time. This also occurs on naturally-generated villages.
Since it is impossible to know exactly what the villager is doing (e.g. he can go out of the house and venture within 32 block radius, potentially spotted by zombies and got slain)
