Moderator Note
Since 1.15, villager deaths are logged in the server console (see MC-165985). Please check these logs before confirming this issue for new versions.
If you're experience this on Realms, make sure that in the "World options" screen, "Spawn NPCs" is enabled.
Mod Violine1101 mentioned in ticket MC-150170 to make a new ticket for this, so here it is. Entire villages worth of villagers are disappearing on a fresh server hosted on my PC, absolutely 0 mods, and no spigot/paper stuff since I'm new to this. The only message I'm seeing of relevance in the server log is "[Server thread/WARN]: Fetching addPacket for removed entity." It occurs at about the right time according to the affected players. Nothing else has yet been reported missing, but it's a small server that we started yesterday. I attached the latest.log where you can see the message first pop up at around 11:17, which matches the player saying that the villagers he lives with have been gone all day. Let me know if I can add anything else to assist.
EDIT: The error message in question coincides with a night successfully being skipped by sleeping, according to the affected players. This seem possibly relevant.
EDIT2: While the above was true, other villager disappearances have occurred without sleep it seems.

Same issue on my 1.14.2 Paper server that averages 1-4 players. Villagers randomly despawn/disappear all the time, though I'm not entirely sure when and what the cause is yet.
Thank god someone else has this. I had a village full of villagers, and one by one they disappeared until there were only two who would not breed. One was master level, I always was near the village, and went to the nether a couple of times, and no more villagers.
I've also only found disappearing villagers. I can confirm my server is also seeing this spam the console:
[Server thread/WARN]: Fetching addPacket for removed entity.
We've had villagers disappear from entirely closed off, slabbed, lit up rooms, so there is no chance any mobs killed the villagers. They appear to just be disappearing.
This is vanilla 1.14.2. No Spigot or Paper.
@violine1101 I have not received reports about any disappearance beyond villagers, and I have not noticed any cows or chickens disappearing, but it may be hard to notice other entities that are collected in large numbers like livestock disappearing. None of my players have armor stands to my knowledge. Let me know how else I can assist.
I raised a similar problem yesterday and it got closed down and linked to this thread:
"Spent a couple of days, off and on, building an iron farm with a 50 bed villager breeder. Had probably got it up to around 20 villagers and iron has started coming through the collection system. After spending some time repairing tools and levelling at a skeleton spawner XP farm (very close to the iron farm laterally but some way below), I realised that the iron had stopped coming through and after going to investigate, all the villagers had gone. I used one of the more popular designs from youtube and it was working well. The villager area was well lit and had a glass block roof (see attached screenshot). The missing blocks in the shot were taken out after the disappearance. How can I recover the villagers; it took me ages to get the two initial villagers into the farm?"
Same problem, I had a little castle with 6 villagers, all with "job" and connected with their "job block", I never trade with them or named them, they all had beds for sleeping, there was a bell in the castle, and lights everywhere, a golem and 2 cats spawned naturally around the castle.
For severals Minecraft days there wasn't any problem, but one day only 1 villager left in the castle (the first I moved in the castle I think), so I went outside to check if the golem was still here, and no, golem and cats were disappeared too, and when I came back in the castle, the only villager left was disappeared.... All in the same session, without restart or quit the server !
I tried to explain the better I can as @violine1101 said in an other ticket, but sorry for my english, I'm really bad (I'm french, sry ! haha)
Confirmed in 1.14.3 pre2
I have also seen the "Fetching addPacket for removed entity" thing for each deleted villager.
If anyone has some way of reproducing this bug reliably it would help us enormously. Been trying for a few hours now and have not had it happen for me at all.
For me it just happened after about 3hrs in one world. I have not found a reliable way to reproduce it. Sorry I am not of any more assistance.
My players seem to believe triggering a night to day switch using beds on the multiplayer server has caused the issue in the past, but I can't confirm this since in their large spread out villages it's hard to keep tabs on each villager. The bug is mostly noticed when an important villager disappears. A player on my server spent a very large amount of time and effort getting a librarian with mending, so when the guy was nowhere to be found yesterday that's how we knew the bug was still occurring (beyond that message in the logs, which appears plenty). Sorry I can't be more helpful, and let me know if there is something I can try to assist further.
The disappearances only happen while I'm on a server (not single player). I noticed that the disappearances happens after restarting the server
As I said in my first comment, in my case, the disappearances didn't happened after any restarting, but during gameplay, with severals players on my servers connected with me !
So yes, I also noticed that happened on a multiplayer server, but not after restarting (in my case).
Today I tried to create the same situation, which happened on my server (creating fortress with bell, beds, lights, jobs blocks and 2 villagers). I let the game turn during 1 hour, was afk away from the fortress and already no disappearances... I continue tomorrow to see after 3 hours, like @@unknown said.
One the other hand, others disappearances continue happening on my server !!!
This affected both by villagers and my sheep (bred and coloured). I had more than 32 sheep and now I have two left; possibly the original two. The only villagers that survived were the farmers I had traded up to master level; and they don't breed (due to another bug).
I had several villagers in an enclosed space, including one with a nametag, and they all disappeared. They had a roof to prevent lightning strikes, and there were no spawnable spaces for hostile mobs.
I also got the bad omen effect and triggered a raid in the area where I had kept them, even though there were no more villagers there.
Also, unlike several others commenting on this thread, I am playing in single player and not on a server.
See MC-154436 (there is also a world download that might be helpful).
The fact that raids can still happen says to me that there might still be villagers around, but they aren't rendered in or loaded or something?
If we could have your worlds to test this issue, this would be very helpful. @unknown already provided one in MC-154436. Please attach the zipped world file to this ticket if you want to help us. (If the file size is too large, please upload it somewhere else and link to it here.)
violine, I think this might actually be the glitch. Not just villagers, but certain entities don't want to render.
In my 1.14.2 world, I had a named cat that was sitting, leaded, inside of a fenced off enclosure. The cat disappeared on me about a week ago, so I thought it had to do with this glitch. However, this morning I noticed that the cat was back in the cage. It appears that the cat was just not being rendered?
I don't know if this is the same issue that others are having here, and like others have mentioned, this is extremely hard to troubleshoot. I will try to enclose some villagers on my world and try to determine if they're really being deleted, or if they're just not being rendered for anyone on my server.
In the same world I later used a command to kill entities and I can confirm that the villagers were in fact gone and not just invisible.
@violine1101 sure. here is a dropbox to my world since it is larger than the 10mb limit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z3f10h2ps9fen74/world.zip?dl=0
As stated, the problem has been occurring since the beginning, noticed mostly at the village that's right near the world's spawnpoint. Most noticeable disappearances were the librarian with mending and the toolsmith with silktouch diamond pickaxes. I can confirm both of them existed, and now cannot be located. Meanwhile, the only cartographer in the town has seemingly been there since the very beginning and not disappeared.
The missing villagers seem to be completely gone since other villagers are taking their beds and worktables, but I can't say much more than that. Let me know if I can assist further.
I would like to confirm that this has happened in my single player world, and raids do not work on that village. The villagers are definitely gone. Let me know if I can be of more use.
Jumping in to say I also lost all of my villagers (and item frames!) between loads on my solo survival world. The village nearby also has far less villagers than before but not all have disappeared. Animal mobs seem to be unaffected. Also, (probably not related, but maybe, idk I'm not a coder) I also had the horse disappearing after dismounting bug.
+1 made an account to add that villagers + other entities are despawning. Had 7 villagers despawn and a horse. Tested this in both survival and creative.
I can confirm that villagers are dissapearing in 1.14.2 Single Player Survival. No raid, no other special events. It happens sometimes during sleep, but also without sleeping.
Horses disappearing might be this unreleated issue: MC-101247. This issue only tracks the disappearance of villagers.
Hmm... Sleeping is kind of teleport event Might be related to chunk borders and teleporting player short distances by entering boat/bed/minecart. I need more informations about this bug, like exact position of villager workstation, bed, players bed, render distance, does villager have bed or is it hapening without a bed etc.
Another guess:
Maybe villager leaving a bed that is close to unloaded area can leave bed at unloaded chunk and this way it deletes itself?
Gonna try to hunt this bug this week.
Testing bug with world from attachment.
I found out that there is POI fletching table that is not connected to any villager, but it is reserved, so noone can be fletcher from it. Coords: 304 70 67
To reproduce download world from here, kill all villagers, go to desired fletching table, replace dors with wall and spawn new willager. He won't take job despite having job POI next to him.
Still I can't reproduce main problem though.
EDIT: Also found reserved (but not occupied) bed at 309 66 27
I also have a world having the same issue if you would like me to upload it as well for comparison.
To answer Michal, my villagers did have beds, but they are in the spawn chunks, which means that they are always loaded.
"but they are in the spawn chunks" This might be important information. Thanks.
@Joe Stennet - sure. I will check it.
@Michal Thank you, however I may have found the reason for the disappearances. I had a nether portal surrounded by fences with a carpet on it, I thought the villagers couldn't jump on the carpet and would be safe, but I went through the portal and found some of them wandering about... I was wrong apparently. I have since moved it into a building with a door and half slab and so far haven't lost the villagers I spawned to test... I will let you know if anything weird presents itself. Thanks again.
@Joe Stennet, had the same issue and although my villagers did indeed wander into the nether, they did despawn while in beds in the block next to chunk borders
@Daniel Conlon, I've seen claimed beds without villager in center of chunk and 2 block higher from subchunk border, so it's not (only) the case.
For the record, the disappearances in my server's world are not nether related. The first reported disappearances were before nether portals were opened, and even after they were the portals were not villager accessible.
Oddly enough, I have not gotten any reports of villagers disappearing recently. The players in charge of the closest major village recently completed some sort of "Villager Mall" where the villager's movements are strictly controlled, and since then there have been 0 disappearances. It's been a few days even. The villagers in this setup are either trapped next to their work block, or trapped in a specific square area. Their beds are nearby, but not accessible. Maybe the disappearances are sleeping related? Or maybe they just occurred when wandering the village? The village was fenced in and well lit, with plenty of golems, so I doubt they died.
EDIT: Also confirming that this village in particular is very close to the world spawn point, but one user in particular lived pretty far off and still had issues, like...1000 blocks away in the X direction alone.
EDIT2: I meant the villagers sleeping, not a player. I have no evidence of relation though, just the circumstantial "my players' villagers aren't currently sleeping and also aren't disappearing."
My village was within about 100-400 blocks from spawn. I don't think these are sleep related. I'm no coder, but they seem to just despawn, besides the addPacket thing.
This happened to me multiple times in the pst week on the Nintendo Switch’s Bedrock edition, latest 1.11.4 edition. It happens pretty much guaranteed every time I use the seed “-101010” throughout all villages, missing golem and animals
This section of the bug tracker is for Java Edition only. For Bedrock Edition, please go to the MCPE project.
Okay so, now i write there
this is what i see and know
1) villagers does not see beds, so they pop out angry particles when in willing mood... so no new villagers..
2) Zombie siege is one of reasons, it happens almost every night with or without peoples in village - its just like World War z combined with rainbow 6, they spawn infinity , then at some point wont spawn anymore, kills around 10 iron golems ( so many they are) kills me, then turns some villagers into zombies till i kill them- last time i killed 120 of them because i had 2 stacks of flesh...
3) villagers not breeding not even 20 beds/doors around
4) if they see someone dies in they look range they try to committ suicide - its looks like this : they search in pathfind some jumping cliff and runs in circle - jumps , then runs back up,jump and so on till they die... and with each damage they run even faster...
5) when they are in fear mood, they act like idiots, they run inside home outside home in out in out all the time till zombies kill them because they let them inside... also normal person villager may run inside homes, but these guys just run in circles
so - problem with pathfind, suicide, and breed.... and they need eyeglasses...
Is it possible that this could be a cause of this bug? https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-151810
Or has anyone had villagers disappearing when they are confined to a safe area?
As Jfarf_Gl said,
" We've had villagers disappear from entirely closed off, slabbed, lit up rooms..."
I don't have any cliffs in my village.
Well i maked fences around high areas now, still i dont have 2 librarians today... and i dont know where they go... some villagers now jump like idiots on one place against wall, and i cant push them away - only when wall is destroyed they move and restock... Also looks like they dont care about daytime and nighttime cycle... they just (some of them) sits near town centre and look in sky, then there starts zombie siege, or one of them just start jumping in some wall type - one against bamboo other one against wall third one just against wood... (there is enough beds and stuff to them for live ).. but they still despawns...( for me its most librarians all time who has mending books trades... other ones stay longer but first who disappear is librarians with most valuable trades... ) also yesterday some pillager patrol spawned inside village wall area... ( i had calculated zones where village ends so i maked wall just on border almost but inside village zone) and so i just seen how patrol spawns inside .. i died and they disappeared too... with 1 villager...
I always make a point to confine my villagers to shops so I can find them and their trades later. I've had unemployed, novice and master villagers disappear from flat and multi-leveled enclosed areas with beds they had used. Said areas were both within and bisected by chunk borders. None of the villagers were named. All well lit areas. In one case, an enclosed area of 22 square blocks (not bisected by a chunk border) had two villagers (librarians) and one disappeared, the other was fine. No patrols have spawned within the village protective border. I have had zombies spawn (still can't find where) inside the village, but some of the disappearances are in double enclosed, covered areas where zombies wouldn't be able to get in and would survive for me to find if they had. I cannot remember if I've stayed in the area or always traveled long distances in the over-world when disappearances have occurred. I have not been able to reliably replicate the issue, it's like it knows when I'm not paying attention... 1.14.2
@@unknown today I found on my server 1.14.2 vanilla that villager in a box 2by2by2 with 1block thick cobblestone wall (with corners) disappeared. Only things inside were recently cured zombie villager and lantern. Attaching screenshot of cage.
13 other villagers that I cured from zombie villager and holding in similar cages (2by2by2, nongrass floor to avoid raiders spawn, lit up with torches, workstation in 2by2 area) did not disappeared.
EDIT: Also dying villagers doesn't left claimed beds and workstations, but those disappearing left behind claimed POIs that new villagers can't use unless thoise POIs are replaced.
Ok thanks. I have been trying to reproduce this bug for 2 weeks now off and on since it is a very severe bug and needs to be fixed. I have also noticed it happen but not been able to recreate it.
There is also problem with they breeding , they stop breed randomly, i have farm for villagers, like 4 farmers in area with ~20 beds around but they start showing hearts giving each other food but then random angry particles, and they stop... so i cant get new ones anymore too...
@Richard, it looks like the claimed POIs problem. Vanished villagers left claimed beds in your village, and new villagers can't get those. For walkaround: Break and replace all beds and workstations in your village.
Has anybody had villagers despawn in singleplayer? I seem to only be able to re-create this on a dedicated server. (I'll post steps soon)
My report of the bug was from my single player world after building an iron farm. I haven't gone back to try and recreate as it took ages to get the first two villages over to the farm form the nearest village and, to be honest until the bug is known to be fixed it seems a waste of time and a waste of villagers! I haven't played since the bugged - a slight case of rage quit I fear after spending ages building the farm and transport to it.
I believe I'm seeing this on single-player 1.14.3 (upgraded from 1.14.2). I don't know enough to do the extensive debugging some folks have done, but I've read this and some of the other related issue threads to see if this issue is consistent with what I'm seeing, and I think it is.
Details: I just started playing a week ago, on single-player Java Edition 1.14.2, survival mode, normal difficulty. I've been completely mystified about village mechanics because after just a couple of in-game days after discovery each of my two villages depopulated down to a single inhabitant. After my upgrade to 1.14.3, I finally found a third village, and watched very carefully to see if they were getting killed at night, but they weren't; they just aren't there any more.
I certainly can't claim to be feeling the pain of people with extensive golem farms on multiplayer servers, but as someone who's just trying to get the hang of the basic game, this is still really frustrating. Does anyone have a workaround for villages that are down to a single inhabitant? I really was going to try to take care of my villagers, but now here I am on my third village and already looking at the prospect of having to drag one all the way across the map just to get started again.
Another file with abandoned village. My character is next to the golem from the village, as I found him still "alive". The village itself is visible from this location.
Been back on to see if I could command in some villagers to my farm, but it appears I didn't turn cheats on for this world. I'm happy to post my world if that helps, but I don't know how to do that.
I am playing on a vanilla 1.14.3 server, and our pigs keep despawning. I'm not sure if it's a related issue.
I'm not sure if this will be helpful or not, but when villagers started disappearing in my world, it seems like their workstations are still assigned to them even though they disappeared.
I had a village filled with nothing but farmers. All the farmers disappeared and I was left with unemployed villagers that were doing nothing. After I created a composter next to a farm, one of the villagers eventually turned into a farmer.
From this experiment, it seems like workstations are still assigned to villagers even though they disappeared. I'm not sure how helpful this will be or if I'm understanding this correctly, but this is what I noticed.
I'm in singleplayer and some of my villagers disappeared 3 times now, 2 times within an hour. It always happened after I went to bed or got back from the Nether. There are no mods downloaded (not even Optifine). I haven't seen any entities other than Villagers disappear. There was one time where a Villager died because it didn't try to avoid to void fall damage, but the first time they disappeared, only one villager remained and before there were around 7. The second time two of them disappeared ( which was the entire population a the time) and the third time only one was gone
Playing on a 1.14.3 multiplayer vanilla server here. Went the whole night killing monsters near the village, and the cleric I was trying to level up disappeared overnight. This is the second time this has happened, except last time an entire majority of the population of a village disappeared (leaving 3 villagers).
The only correlation I can see was that both times we encountered witches, who spawned outside of the village (not inside due to lightning or anything like that).
My village is almost completely enclosed by fences and all holes/caves have been plugged up. There is nowhere for them to go and die inside of.
I'm playing on 1.14.3 vanilla server running on a Linux box. I'm the only one playing in the server world. I have been playing in creative mode with the difficulty of peaceful. I had 3 farmers and lots of other villagers. The area is surrounded by a fence, no gates. There are no high structures to fall from and no holes to fall into in the village. I went underground to build under the village for a long time. Later when I came back to the surface at least two of the famers, two clerics, and a number of other villagers had vanished.
I cannot explain their disappearance because I was on Peaceful the entire time. I was trying to build up the village. The only way I can think the villagers may have disappears is by drowning in either the well or a few small areas of water. Aside from that I'm at a loss on how the villagers vanished.
Update: I think I may have found out why my villagers were disappearing. Seems there was some lava surrounded by blocks. The roof was two blocks high. I came out of a building in time to see one of the villagers incinerate. I made access 1.5 blocks high. I'll update again if villagers continue to disappear.
I'm having villagers disappear in my game too.

I'm playing Minecraft 1.14.3 Java Edition with no mods.
I started the game in single player mode.
I have the game open to a LAN server on standard local wifi.
I'm playing with another person who has a Windows 10 Lenovo laptop.

THE ISSUE
I started a new world in creative mode. I found a Grasslands village with 7 villagers and 1 iron golem. They have 2 bells in their town center.
I tore down several houses so now there is only 5 houses. I don't remember how many there were before. I changed the structure of the houses but I didn't add any new valid houses.
We had every villager nametagged.
After I played by myself some distance away and came back, 2 villagers were gone.
After me and my friend played together within the village, one villager didn't come back.
After I closed out of the game and went back in, a villager was missing.
We notice the missing villagers when the villagers don't show up at the town center during night time.
We notice the missing villagers when the villagers don't return to their work stations or their beds.
After a few days with only 3 villagers, we spawned in a new villager from a spawn egg, making the total visible villagers 4. Up until this point, none of the villagers went into love mode.
There are 5 houses and 10 beds. (1 house with 3 beds, 3 houses with 2 beds and one house with 1 bed)
We have 8 work stations in the village. 1 Stone Cutter, 1 Cartography Table, 1 Smoker, 1 Lectern, and 4 Composters. Only the Smoker is the original.
We traded with the villagers to make them happy, and we threw bread at them. They have access to farms and they trade food and gossip with each other. The 4 villagers tried to go into love mode once, but the love particles stopped abruptly and they had angry particles briefly.
A few minecraft days later and a new game session later, a new iron golem spawned so now there's 2 iron golems.
World Save Information
World Difficulty: Peaceful
Game Mode: Creative Mode with cheats
World Type: Default
Village Type: separate houses with free access to walk around on the overworld; not a trading hall
Security: there's a wall all around the village with fences to keep out villagers from dangerous spots. There are no holes or high points to fall off of. However, we have a river with pufferfish in it, and we have berry bushes on the outside walls. They also have access to a lake. However, none of the villagers wander to the berry bushes or pufferfish, and they don't go swimming. After one of our villagers fell in the pufferfish river and died, we kept a close eye on them and secured danger spots. After that, this is when we started noticing the villagers disappearing. There's no evidence of any of the disappeared villagers dying.
Raids: We've been on 100% peaceful since the game started, and we've not had any raids or illiger curses on either me or my friend since we started playing.
Redstone: I have a few very small and simple redstone contraptions, one under the village, and a few scattered in the world.
Command Block: we have 1 command block that's activated by pressure plate to turn the weather back to clear when it rains.
Item Frames: we have a wall with 32 item frames on them, displaying renamed objects and items.
Beds and Sleeping: at first it was because we were skipping nights and sleeping, so we stayed up all night. Then I was worried that the villager daily schedules weren't working properly because some villagers wouldn't route to their homes at night, they would just sit and not move when it was dark, so in the day they weren't going to the town center to gossip and throw food at each other. So we slept most nights and through rainstorms. We sleep in beds away from the village but still in visible distance. This seemed to help them find their way to their beds and workstations, and come out at noon to trade, but it didn't stop the random disappearances.
Deleted my report. Looks like it was my fault - zombies where able to get in through the open top, convert the all and then de-spawn.
I am playing on a server which is on Vanilla 1.14.3. I have a village underground in a mushroom fields biome, so nothing can spawn. I've witnessed two of my villagers disappearing and the only common thing about these villagers are that they were both librarians who sold mending books and they were both zombiefied and cured. The drowned who zombiefied them is locked behind an iron door and is sitting in a boat, so it could not have killed my villagers. Anyone else is not having a similar problem, so I'm guessing it's somehow related to zombiefication and curing. Also I am sure, that they have not died as I saw both of these villagers before and I didn't see the subtitles saying "Villager dies"
Experienced it 1.14.4 pre-releases. Haven't seen that happening 1.14.3... but I do know that it's still there.
Currently experiencing this in 1.14.3
Several villagers disappearing, no zombies got in, no zombies had access to their houses, just one day several of them just disappeared.
I'm currently experiencing it on Bedrock Android
First it started with some villagers just disappearing, I figured it out that mobs were spawning inside my village.
Okay, got everything lighted up, put some iron golems and it was fine for a while. After some days passed by I noticed that all my villagers were gone, including my iron golem.
I thought that it was mobs again, so I went there to repopulate the village again.
But now there's a twist. All new villagers couldn't adquire a job.
I think that all the villagers that were gone are still linked to they respectfully job sites and beds, so they weren't killed.
Other thing worth noting, not just my normal villagers disappeared, a named villagers of mine (a librarian with mending) also disappeared, and his job site still linked to him, I've tested it.
Also, some of my minecarts that were in my Redstone builds also disappeared.
I suspect that's a SAVE FILE problem, I like to make backups of my worlds, and make copies to test things in creative. Because in some of my early backups, everything is fine and nobody disappeared.
I hope this get fixed quickly, it's pretty darn annoying.
I'm playing on a 1.14.3 server on Realms. We built a wall surrounding the entire village ensuring all of them were safe and all spaces sufficiently lit. There are about 30 iron golems within the village now, so it's a slim chance any were killed by mobs. We thought we were missing light spaces somewhere, but after spending several nights awake to see if mobs would spawn, it seemed like none did. We had about 40 villagers at one point due to them naturally breeding, and now it's dwindled down to about 10 for no apparent reason. I tried summoning new villagers to see if they would stay (about 20) and they also disappeared over time. There are a few that have never disappeared the entire time, though I'm not sure what makes them different from the others since they all have different professions. Possibly the original group that was in the village before we improved it? We have all professions in the village now but we didn't find it like that.
10/Aug/19 Update: We decided as a group that we would spawn the amount of villagers back that we lost, and give them all nametags. We now have 41 total villagers, all with unique names. We haven't had any disappear since naming them. However, we haven't named any since, and I think we've had some new ones appear and disappear. They don't seem to disappear as babies (though not 100% sure on that), but they don't last very long once they turn into adults since we don't ever see any adults with no names, but often see babies. It seems like they're despawning when they shouldn't, but they end up not despawning when they have names on them.
Had this happen in 1.14.4-pre5. The villagers that disappeared were in a lit up and 100% enclosed place where no zombie could reach them.
This has begun happening to me. It seems as if they only disappeared when they were gathering or playing but it has taken my entire village!
I'm currently playing in 1.14.3 and I experienced this as well. I noticed only NOVICE villagers despawn, everybody who is either apprentice or above is fine, at least I haven't had any issues with despawning since I've leveled up all my villagers. I'm keeping track of baby villagers and after growing up + leveling up at least once they don't seem to despawn.
While interesting, the reason this ticket was made was because players were having villagers they had put time and resources into disappear, such as enchanters who gained valuable enchants or toolsmiths with diamond pickaxes, not novices.
realm
1.14.3
a lot of my villager is disappearing on the server****
in farms ranamed and not novice villager , is disappearing
they are in closed area with roof and light
a lot of my best trading villager is gone 😞
-the place it has NOT happen yet is in the nether ( i have them there also)
if its matter all villager i have in nether was created in 1.13.xx not 1.14.xx
Could this be related to https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-146360 and https://bugs.mojang.com/browse/MC-147174, even though the latter is marked as Fixed? Were the beds of disappeared villagers next to walls?
One report was that skipping night by sleeping caused disappearances. Maybe that could make it worse, but not being the only cause...
There have been issues with mobs glitching into walls when the world loads and suffocating there, maybe caused by starting to wander before the blocks have loaded. Maybe another potential reason (not sleep-related).
I have this issue in my single player world as well. Created in 1.13, village is in the spawn chunks. Missing around 10 villagers overnight. Remaining two refuse to breed to create more despite many available beds and profession blocks.
Bedrock Edition seems to have a similar problem (see MCPE-46064), maybe one or two of these issues are happening in Java Edition as well:
"Villagers get into bed in incorrect orientations and slowly shift back to the normal sleeping position. This can cause them to suffocate if there are solid blocks nearby.
Sleeping villagers, upon load of the game, stand up in their beds, causing them to suffocate if there is a 2 high ceiling with solid blocks. Weirdly enough, in my case this only seems to affect villagers lying on bed that are set up in east (feet) to west (head) direction. However it could also be a chunk border issue as all the affected beds were in line.
A villager can directly, without other elements mentioned above, suffocate in the bed. Seen with a farmer, but this issue seems rarer than the other two (which repro every single time)."
Can anyone who is having this problem confirm if any of this is the case in their world? I have not been able to reproduce it in a village with 68 villagers - each and every one of them is fine. I have slept through the night and stayed awake, was alone on the (Realms) server and with other players. I keep track of the villagers using the command output of their NBT data and only noticed that some of them (who have not been traded with) keep changing professions or trades, making it appear as if one special villager is gone while he only changed profession. I haven't experienced any real vanishing, but from the reports, others have. Not that I am complaining that it does not happen for me, but I don't want to login one day and find them all gone.
I do not think they are dying, because that does not explain the "[Server thread/WARN]: Fetching addPacket for removed entity." spam.
Edit: This also seems to happen in spawn chunks more often than not.
I have had a similar issue with villagers disappearing near the spawn chunks in 1.14.4. They were named so I believe if they were dying by suffocation in a wall there would have been a death message, and they did not have access to beds.
Right, that's true. I did some tests yesterday, incl. relogging quite a few times at night with lots of sleeping villagers around, and while I did see them move around and their heads going further and further into the wall, none did suffocate. Immediately after relogging they were all perfectly aligned on their beds (not standing) and then shifted back into their previous position. I didn't test a 2-block high ceiling.
Both of our villages are in the spawn chunks as well, and both are completely fine. The world was created in 1.13.2, updated to 1.14 and then to 1.14.4 directly (we skipped .1-.3 because of the bugs). So some villagers are the 1.13.2 ones, all leveled up, most were born in 1.14 due to MC-145863 and one in 1.14.4. Most have been traded with at least once, the remaining few sometimes change trades or profession. (Maybe this info can help seeing a pattern, although I doubt it.)
I reported this issue too and it was marked as resolved based on duplication (this report refers).
My disappearances were also in the spawn chunks of a Hardcore game, all losses were in "Safe and Well lit up areas"
Another observation (related?) is that a villager in my iron farm slides up the bed and then takes drowning damage.

I have a series of backups that have a before and after where 3 specific villagers were present in the first and missing in the second. It was about a 5hr AFK inbetween backups.
If you think this can help, let me know how can i get the zip files to you ?

On closer inspection, where there are villagers that have gone missing, there are also mine-carts missing. These 3 villagers were in a farm using the stacked hopper mine-carts to catch the farmed produce. In all 3 cases, both of the stacked hopper carts are missing too.
Other missing villagers were not in or near a cart.
Hope this helps

World backups are always a great help. You can attach the zipped world files directly to this ticket. If the file size is too large, you can also upload it somewhere else and then link to it here.

If this happened in a version prior to 1.14.2, it is possible that you were affected by another glitch (MC-150170) that caused any entities to disappear. That glitch should be fixed now. We're currently searching for a way to reproduce this problem in 1.14.4, preferably in a fresh world.
This is entirely 1.14.4 I will upload the files to here. In the earlier backup you can see 4 farms each with 2 farmers (total 8) in the later file (22 game days later) 3 of the farmers are missing. Let me know if you need any other information,

If you're experiencing entities other than villagers disappearing, that's not included in this ticket. Please include a new one, preferably with as much information as possible.
@unknown, thanks for the download, I'll take a look at it and see if I can find anything.
I experience the same issue with my villagers on nintendo switch...despite having fully protected it with light, walls and golems...on top of that, having each villager with a name tag
I've experienced this too. My village, which consisted of 15 villagers on world-gen and has plenty of golems and is well-lit, has slowly been losing villagers for some unexplained reason. Yesterday, the final villager disappeared with no explanation.
I've also been having this issue. I've been creating a trading hall on a realms server, and have noticed villagers disappearing with no way for them to die. I have noticed by having them in 2x3x1 rooms that the villagers seem for the most part to disappear in the same spots. I noticed a few of my masons had gone missing on the top floor, and after replacing them and checking back after a while it seemed more villagers disappeared in the same spots.
Edit: After playing more recently, it doesn't seem to matter where I have the villagers, as other villagers have despawned in more places. I've noticed that when they are despawning, they like to despawn in groups it seems. What I mean is the ones that disappear are normally going in groups of 2-4 in the same row adjacent to each other. It almost seems like the game is mistaking them for hostile mobs and despawning them randomly when they are more than 32 blocks away from me.
There's villagers constantly disappearing from my realm, not sure if it's related. Can't exactly access any logs because these realms are hosted on your side.
It's not that all villagers disappearing all at once, it's more like they are unable to find beds and disappearing because of that. There's plenty of beds though, big walls around the whole thing, no dark place anywhere for anything hostile to spawn.
Around the time when these villagers are disappearing, there's always baby villagers around. Not sure if the babies come before or after the adults start disappearing but it feels as though the "baby spawning" and the "adult bed finding" do not use the same method of checking the number of beds in the village.
when i was climbing up from my mine, i heard my villager's dead scream then my villagers all disappear, hope this infomation will help 😞
I have a habit of building my house in villages and every world I've done this in (5 separate worlds with many more villages in the past couple weeks) this has happened. It doesn't matter if I'm near the village or so far that the chunk is unloaded, it doesn't matter if I sleep or not, every villager and every golem as well will despawn after about a week or two in-game. There used to be a way to get them back that I did where I unloaded the chunk and then came back but that no longer seems to work.
In 1.14.4 (Java) villagers in my world seems to take jobs for which there is already a position taken. As an example 3 unemployed villagers taken from a close village transported using nether portals, all becoming librarian even if there is only one Lectern already assigned to an already existing villager and even though there where other job site blocks. All of the new villagers disappeared after some minutes.
I've also tried to put some name tag to some of them but still they disappeared.
I am having this exact same issue in my survival world as well. No other entities have disappeared, only my villagers, and they do so in groups. My entire village's population disappeared without a trace for an unknown reason. While I understand that bugs (especially ones like these) can be difficult to trace and fix, it would be a massive help since these disappearances are detrimental to many players.
In my instances of this bug, all villagers inside of the village I walled in disappear, but one nitwit and one random unemployed villager that strayed far away towards my house did not disappear, so it could be related to only recognized villages.
same issue here. it may have been happening for awhile but i didn't notice it right away, but as soon as i moved the villagers into the new trading hall they stated to vanish at an alarming rate every sleep cycle. my trading hall is right on my world spawn so if you want to look at it as well send me an email and i'll upload it. [email protected]
Same issue here on Bedrock (realms, Switch). Villagers disappearing entirely from most villages and even from my trading cave. most recently happened when I went 10000 blocks away to find a mansion. Came back and all of my farmers in my trade room went missing.
This is the bug tracker for Java Edition. If you have an issue with the Bedrock Edition of the game, please head over to the MCPE section of this bug tracker.
So here's what I confirmed about this glitch:
It seems impossible to reproduce quickly. This only seems to happen in worlds that are played in for a very long time (roughly a couple hours at least).
The type of villager does not matter. I've had nitwits, traded/untraded villagers with and without a profession, and villagers that are cured and traded with being despawned.
Villagers will despawn alone or in groups. This may depend on chunk boundaries, and I may test if it does after a while.
I have never seen a villager despawn within a certain distance of me or when I was trading with it, and this glitch is not known for this kind of despawning.
Villagers can still have POI (place(s) of interest) if they despawn, meaning that a bed or workstation that a despawned villager still "owns" will not be used by villagers. These POI presumably are no longer owned if they are broken and placed, even if they are put back in the same place, similarly to how villagers get and lose workstations when they still exist. Workstations and beds are still owned by villagers if you obstruct them with blocks or make it impossible for the non existent villager to get to (not like they can get to it either way).
Here is what I didn't confirm about the glitch, but is pretty plausible it happens anyway:
Villagers can despawn even with "persistenceRequired:1" (or name tag)
Villager despawning is not yet confirmed to be on chunk boundaries (but I will test it later)
Villagers have to be in a village in order to despawn, so they must have access to a bell, a bed, and/or a workstation
I have had this happen to me on a minecraft realm several times, and once on a single player save over the course of a few weeks, all in 1.14.4, all with zero (Even client side only) mods.
Singleplayer:
Setup base in village. Went mining under village one day and returned to zero villagers. There were several iron golems, but I assumed this time they got overwhelmed by a zombie raid or something.
Realms:
First time was on a regular desert village. Large village with 8 iron golems spawned, so I doubted it was mobs, still had enough to repopulate it. This one has had almost all the villagers about three times.
Next was in the village I created in a ravine. Villagers are completely boxed in with iron doors at all entrances/exits and fences and walls surrounding every walkway. This has happened about 3 times, however, two of the times, I found most of the villagers hidden in a small 1x2x1 space ON THE OTHER SIDE OF A WALL. I only found them after hearing a lot of Hrrms in a certain rooms and mined out a hole where the sounds were coming from when about 15 of them all exploded out like a clown car. There is also no way the missing guys died to mobs somehow, as there is about 40 iron golems in the village concentrated at the entrance and the dormitories.
Finally, a successful iron golem farm lost 4/6 villagers that were completely boxed in in a 1x2x1 space after spending much time wrangling them into place. It took a lot of effort to trap them there so I'm kind of just giving up on minecraft for the moment. In this instance, all villagers in the farm were name tagged, as I thought that may help with preventing their disappearance. This instance I was AFK a handful of chunks away, but under ground from the Iron golem farm, so it seems to happen whether my character sleeps or not.
EDIT: This was the farm setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q08sHGmuNUA
I think some of this may be as users have said, been because they are near a chunk border, as a lot of the beds in the desert village and in the iron golem farm were touching (but not crossing over) a chunk border after using F3 + G to inspect. However, only a handful of the beds in the ravine village have beds touching or crossing chunk borders.
Villagers being on the other side of the wall sounds like MC-2025.
This has happened to me twice, it's a relief I backed up the world before it happened. I'm on a survival world on a remote island with no nearby villages. After many days I get a zombie villager to naturally spawn on the island, and I managed to cure him into a normal villager. I roughly get him into a small space with a single block window for me to talk to him. I placed a torch in the little cage to keep him safe and a lectern beside him so he'd trade as a librarian, and I landed some of the greatest deals and discounts from him. I've been trading with him for a long MC time, and I always make backups when I exit. About a month ago, after trading with him a bit more and also having a wandering trader + a few llamas arrive on the island, I went on to doing a few more stuff, including getting the Sniper Duel goal. Shortly after I do that (usually at night) I go back to my little cage, having noticed that the librarian is gone. I tried logging back in to see if it's just him becoming invisible, but he wouldn't come back. Also, the wandering trader and his llamas were gone too, but that's besides the point.
Today, I loaded the backup world, with everything as it was prior to the villagers' disappearances. Assuming a baby zombie was able to get into the cage and kill the librarian, I took an oak slab and placed it in front of the window, so only things less than half a single block could get through. So I did the same thing as I did last month: trade with the villagers, go mining, etc. and re-taking the Sniper Duel goal. Around that time, the villager and trader and llamas disappeared again. I then thought that either the sniping duel goal was making it happen, or me just leaving far from the area, or somehow a zombie was still getting to him. So I loaded the world in creative to see that none of those were the case.
About the confirmations: I was playing for only 40 minutes when it happened to me today, as seen by the log. I logged off quickly for 10 seconds, but the villager was still there after that time. So time MIGHT be the cause, but if so, it takes far less than a few hours. And when the villager disappeared, so did his Point of Interest. In creative mode, I spawned another villager by the same lectern, and he took the job, still with zombies and baby zombies unable to even hit him.
Attached are the log file for my play through in which the disappearances happened today, as well as a screenshot of the cave I took with the oak slab above, to prove that zombies or baby zombies couldn't have gotten in. This all happened in 1.14.4, but it seems like this has been going on for a while alongside many other bugs.
I've had a villager (master with nametag) vanish right before my eyes. I right-clicked on him to attempt a trade. The entire game froze for about 10 seconds, and then poof! He wasn't there anymore, and he wasn't anywhere else in my village. That was in 1.14.4 multiplayer.
BTW, "Very Important" understates the criticality of this bug. It has rendered villages useless, destroying multiple years of trade development. The whole 1.14 upgrade is dead, a multi-year setback. Our server has lost 75% of our players. Minecraft has lost its market momentum, and it might never recover. Microsoft may have just flushed its billion dollar investment down the toilet with this one bug. Isn't there a higher level for that?
I seem to be experiencing the same issue. I found a large, spread out village with half in a plains biome and half in a desert. with a large, steep hill in the middle. I made my house on the plains side because who wouldn't. All of the villagers on the plains side are gone, and only two remain on the desert side. All the plains villagers disappeared at once, and I assumed they had been killed. The desert side had a few villagers left, I think 4, but they were acting strange. They would not stay near the houses ever. They only stayed out on the area just outside of the houses. Slowly, though, those have disappeared often. They should be in rendering distance being just longer than an ender pearl throw away, and I can see the houses and such from my own house, yet it seems every few times I head over another has disappeared. Any help would be nice, as it is getting the point where I am getting frustrated that I can't do anything with villagers (one of my favorite parts), and I am slightly scared of trying to do more with villagers as they might disappear. This is on a newish Windows 10 machine with 1.14.4. I don't know how to do a world upload, but if you want I can try that. Also this is a personal single player world.
Can confirm this bug is NOT resolved. Villagers are despawning more frequently than before the recent patch. Seems to only happen in multiplayer and once again is bed related. Mobs in SP don't seem to be despawning.
This game is becoming almost unplayable, every single day majority or all of my villagers are despawning in peaceful mode, on single player, and completely walled in. And I have to drop eggs for new villagers, and destroy and replace beds and work stations. It's becoming very annoying.
The bug seems to be related to Beds. I had a few tool smiths at master level inside a well lit and sealed building. They just vanished. Their work stations were occupied, but they were no where to be found.
I removed the beds from their area and so far the villagers are still there.
The problem is now that villages are dependent on beds it makes creating more very troublesome.
Just experienced this for myself, I built a villager breeder(image attached) with no way for zombies to get in, and had 3 villagers in it, and then afked at my nearby AFK fisher. Came back a few hours later, and all three were gone and there was somehow a Husk inside...
PS. I checked the light levels of every block inside, none were 7 or darker, so a Husk should not have even been able to spawn... I have no idea what is happening here...
EDIT: checked my server's console, i did not get the error the OP was describing... seems like there are quite a few causes for this.
[media]I am also experiencing this issue. Minecraft server v1.14.4. Iron farm in spawn chunks (and contained within a single chunk). Villagers and zombies have sporadically disappeared multiple times.
I had this too and it really took me out of playing the game as I was in the middle of expanding and remodeling the village on an island. I know I set the game to a LAN one to access cheats, and had to log off after to get the game back to just on this computer, but I'm not sure if that is related or not. Oddly enough the naturally generated, and the iron golem I built were still wandering around when I went to spectator to see if they got stuck in a cave again or something.
I have started experiencing this with 19w45b. I have villagers in different places on my server. I started seeing the villagers disappear when I left them to stand on the bottom half of half slabs. All my other villagers have remained in their areas. I have left them without beds in some areas, i have left them to stand only on beds in other areas and they haven't disappeared so I don't believe that the beds have to do with it.

Any new information on this? It's still a problem being reported by users in many different forums.
@[helper] gaspoweredpick clarified it above.
The issue does NOT happen right away, nor even after a few hours sometimes. It mostly begins to happen after players have logged many hours fortifying villages, trading and leveling up villagers, working on bringing in new professions, etc etc. Basically the villagers only start disappearing after a lot of work has been put into them... which is the worst time for this bug to appear. Pretty much ruins the whole point of the village/pillage update and has been going on since its release.
@Chris Chance is correct. I greatly expanded and fortified a village in my server, and then a LOT of iron golems spawned and the majority of villagers simply disappeared (only three left). Using 1.14.4.
on my world, 1.14, vanilla, i noticed that the main problem i was having had to do with the villagers sliding off thier beds while sleeping. if i made a trading hall with walls around 3 sides of the bed, i would lose 1 to 4 villagers every night. i am guessing that they would slide off the bed into the wall and die there. on some occasions, they would end up on the other side of the wall which would lead to 2 villagers in one stall and on empty stall next to it. once i remade the trading hall with a space all around the bed, i stopped losing villagers inside the trading hall.
as far as the outdoor village, the general mechanics are still broken, as villagers don't go into homes at night, wander away from the village, or just stand there until a mob chases and kills them. also, since all of the beds in the village homes are against walls, they may be glitching into or through them as well when sliding out of bed.
and last but not least, when a villager slides out of bed, they usually don't go back to bed. they either stand next to the bed all night, or in the case of an outdoor village, all of the villagers that slid out of bed will exit their houses and walk to another house to sleep in another bed. maybe they get killed along the way.
Attached an image (
[media]) of the one time I managed to reproduce the issue. Could not get it to happen again after that though.

remove every other bed so they are not right next to each other to watch them slide off the beds.
then put walls 2 blocks high between the beds and see what happenes after a few nights go by.

I have avoided because of this bug so far version 1.14 to 1.14.4. I've updated my 1.13.2 world to 1.15 pre 6 now. In a few hours of play, half of the villagers in my village are despawned for no reason. That has never happened before. Play again with a backup in 1.13.2. I hope this bug is resolved in 1.16 because pre 6 will seem to be the last trial version before 1.15.
I see a lot of people blaming the bed siding for it.
I have a floating iron farm that has the beds with no walls around them and though the villagers do indeed slid off them constantly they never fall off. Maybe because there is no other block to exit to other than the containment cell but it just looks like a graphic glitch otherwise.
On the other hand, I've had villagers in farms and closed rooms with no beds at all and they have disappeared with no trace so these may be two different issues. I don't think they are disappearing because of the beds
I should add my base is on a mooshroom island so there is no way the cause of the disappearances are hostile mobs getting in
@Carlos Sanchez
I agree that they are 2 separate issues. the bed sliding accounts for some of the problems but I also have villagers disappearing for no reason and all of my village as well as my other activities are inside a huge closed in facility. It is completely lit up so nothing can spawn in there except enderman and iron golems. Vexes can go through walls but i haven't had a raid in a very long time and villagers are still vanishing, just not at a fast rate.
Update on my experience with this issue:
BEDS. Ignoring this seemingly new issue where they automatically slide off, they do pose an un-guaranteed, but very possible temporary solution. As I once commented back in Sept, my once-zombie librarian villager kept disappearing, in spite of how shortly of time I spend not trading, and how he's stuck in a 2x2x2 cave with a lectern, torch, and empty half slab for a window. Haven't touched that world or reloaded it in a backup for a long time. However, while playing in my realm, which is 100% creative mode, I noticed that villagers who sleep during the night have a more difficult time vanishing than ones who don't. Whilst I have game rule doDaylightCycle set to false, while a few shepherds with a 1x2x1 latch didn't disappear even without a bed, two villagers in a more wide open area did. When I re-enabled the day cycle, and respawned more villagers on a floating platform, nobody disappeared, and the reason I'm forced to believe are them getting a healthy amount of sleep. This could be very incorrect, but it does mean a much lower chance of vanishing for them. As I'm seeing people have this new "sliding off" issue, I can absolutely see how that would help support how villagers are still vanishing for some people. My only suggestion would be to have the bed surrounded by slabs, and it would be harder for them to fall off... unless there's a bug that makes them move with nothing touching them. Either way, I pray there will be an official fix to this soon, and I hope this updated feedback helps.
Older comments suggested that the villagers didn't die (no death message), but just vanished. Is that still the case or are the missing villagers now just dying? Not sure if there is a death message for unnamed villagers...
I've had no disappearances in any of my villages at all. They are all lit up and fenced in. Not all villagers sleep because some forgot their beds (and workstations) which is another known bug. Some of them roam around the edge of the village, searching for POIs, and I've had occurences of them glitching through a double fence-wall combination (see MC-2025), ending up outside the safe area (luckily none got killed recently). That might explain why villagers who don't sleep are affected.
Glitching through walls can also happen when getting out of bed (see MC-152945), maybe even glitching into walls and suffocating? That might explain why villagers who do sleep are affected. The ones in my villages sometimes sleep near walls, but not in tight spaces and often with glass (panes) at the walls. They also slide off, with their heads sometimes dangerously far inside the wall, but nothing happened (yet).
In the screenshot Maria Lemón sent, it seems as if the villages of one chunk all vanished, without any walls next to their beds (if I interpreted it correctly). This is not explained by my speculation above, so I also think it is actually several possible reasons. One question is what I asked first, whether they die or just vanish/despawn. Has anyone observed it happening in current versions?
I have had this issue occur in several worlds. Most recently, it happened in a 1.14 realm with 3 villagers inside a 3x3 room with beds and workstations, which I initially thought all died in a raid, but I had a new raid spawn there even though there are no more villagers.
I have found that this disappearing Issue has returned for me in 1.15.1
I have been playing on a server with friends and had set up a basic villager breeder. there was no way for adult villagers to leave. We had some in a sorting system, in the breeder and even some roaming around. Every single one disappeared.
The breeder was fully lit and sealed.
We went back to the village to get more villagers, after having them at our base for a while they too disappeared.
If it would be useful for me to make a ticket and go into more detail since its 1.15.1 I can do that 🙂
This ticket is dedicated for tracking this issue. If you have more details, you can post them here. What would be especially usefull to know is if there is any trace of your villager in the server logs.
After looking through server logs it appears they were all slain by zombies, I'm still not sure how this could have occurred though due to where they were stored. If I find anything useful I'll let you know.
Can zombie sieges still spawn in high light levels? It's been an issue for a long time and it's always disheartening when a siege spawns even though you've completely lit up an area. That's my best guess as to what could have happened to your own villagers Jack Reid.
Yes, they can, after adding more villagers back I had a massive zombie siege happen. My friends and I currently think that someway or another zombies were the cause.
Zombies may explain some isolated disappearances, but I have had a villager vanish right before my eyes (I right-clicked to initiate trade, the game froze for several seconds, and** then the villager blinked out of existence, never to be seen again). I have also had villagers vanish overnight while I patrolled the whole village, and I have had villagers vanish when I slept in a bed so there was no night.
My theory is that all exceptions in villager management lead to a catch-all exception handler that simply deletes the troublesome villager rather than gracefully recovering. That means that every bug in the village & pillage update funnels down to eliminating villagers. Thus, there is no single error, only a single outcome for each and every error.**
I've had this happen to me both in a mooshroom island base, peaceful and within no spawning range so really don't think it has anything to do with zombies. I've also been afk within the same room as the villagers when they disappeared so I would have been dead as well if that was the case
After looking in the logs AND recording an afk session watching my villagers, I have seen firsthand them despawn...
I watch as they just dissapear, and it's not because of chunks or of distance, as I was only about 20 blocks away from them....
I have figured it out! (I hope)
My villagers kept despawning in my sky iron farm. I thought it was to chunks or mobs, but when I recorded an afk session I saw that they just dissapeared without a mob hitting them, and I was only AT MOST 2 chunks away.
So I decided to take a look.
My iron farm is set up so that they are all in a 1x1 area. And the video I used to set it up put a waterlogged trapdoor at the bottom to make sure that they dont bounce, in order to make the iron farm more efficient.
I decided to take away the trapdoor at the bottom and just use a water block. And they havent despawned yet!
It's been 3 days and I've gone over 5k blocks away. And nothing has happened to then, so I hope this helps anyone who's having trouble with their villagers.
The video that I used to set up my iron farm was:
I don't think that has anthing to do with it. I have the exact same farm and the guys bouncing on the waterlocked preassure plate are actually the only ones that have never despawned so far
might not help, but I've had a bunch of villagers in a building I made and none have despawned in the span of a few months. the walls are 2 blocks thick and the only blocks they are able to stand on are beds, grass blocks, oak planks, workstations and chests.
Not sure if you read the comments of the video, but the disappearance could be them suffocating in water when they sleep for longer than they should.

Hey folks! If you've built this design in Java Minecraft and you find the villagers keep dying, try moving the villager cells one block closer to the zombie. I had to fix my own farm recently, so I explained why this happens in another video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGLfvRAFABk
I've been building a trading hole since 1.14.3 it's a chamber where I breed them, send them to a zombie in a minecart and convert them, then use railways to throw them into booths where the floor is lined with job site blocks covered in carpets, the entrance is 2 block height passage with carpet at the bottom, so they can't run away. The first time villagers disappeared was in the zombie cell, so I though they had just been turned to zombies and despawned, that was when updating to 1.14.4. But now, after going to 1.15.1, I had actually launched the game several times yesterday and the day before with no issue. But today I open the game and find an entire booth, 15 fishermen villagers and one leatherworker who grabbed the wrong job site block, all vanished!
Just to simplify debugging last release added logs for villagers deaths in form of "Villager ... died, message: ...", so please check for this line before reporting of this bug.
@boq I've grepped all my logs and I can't find any Villager ... died, message: ... that is related to villagers disappearing on my server. I would guess at least 5 villagers have gone missing. Nobody has killed them and there are no messages from those villagers. I do get those messages from villagers that die from zombies or other enemies, but none of those messages match the names or locations of the disappeared villagers. This happened in 1.15.1.
It also makes me wonder if other mobs or entities are disappearing, too.
@Excited Do you know how you managed to reproduce it? Did you leave and re-enter the area until it did something? (single-player or on a server?)
If you can share some details, maybe I can help figure this out together.
I have a boat with 2 villagers in it. When the boat is centered in one chunk and one of the villagers is centered in another chunk, that villager gets removed from the game when I restart the server. On start up, I get the following error:
[10:37:04] [Server thread/WARN]: Wrong location! (-11, 8) should be (-12, 9), axt['Villager'/6, l='world', x=-175.92, y=67.90, z=143.61]
You can see the chunk borders in the screenshots. Any villager that jumps in the boat gets removed the next time I restart the server. I was able to replicate this with bees and cows as well.

@Jeffery Delia that's totally reproducible. Great!
I managed to do it 3 out of 3 times. Two times both villagers disappeared, the third time two pigs disappeared. I'm not sure how that applies to the villagers disappearing in my server because they're not in boats, but the root cause of this bug may be the same.
Just set up a boat on a chunk corner, add to mobs such that one is in one chunk and one in the other. Exit the game then load back in. They'll appear for a frame or so and then disappear. It also works with other types of mobs (I've tried pigs). Same set-up.
I've attached my screenshots and latest.log file. This was done on a single player world.
[media][media][media][media]
I believe in my case both villagers disappeared because they were both in different chunks compared to the boat they were in (which is possible at a chuck corner). Here are two screenshots that demonstrate this better; in these cases only one (or none) of the villagers in the boats disappear because they share the chunk coordinate with the boat they are in.
Here is the relevant log section (because the log file is getting very big) from screenshot to screenshot for this instance.

Boat error is MC-136760, but that's common for all entities. We are still trying to figure out if this bug something villager-specific - maybe other entities disappear, but villagers are only ones other than pets most people care about.
This is still happening in 1.15.2 w/ out boats. Playing in a realm on Java edition w/ my friends and we made a few villager farms (including the exact one shown in an attachment from OP) and the villagers all eventually disappear.
in 1.15.1 I can also confirm that villagers are despawn without any trace at all even when maxed out and name tagged. I have a similar effect when i am killed by an entity and I go back to that area the mob have completely disappeared. I use the /back command to go right back to where I died and if in the overworld with no roof the mob will have despawned. I have yet to do any testing on 1.15.2
I have upgraded to 1.15.2 and without any leveling the the villagers are still despawning. I did notice this wasn't as likely to happen if the villagers were master. So I upgraded them all 3 to master and this is the longest I have went without any issue. Setting afk till morning will comment back when/if they despawn.
so far the villagers have made it much further along than any of the others they are nametaged and master where as before i had nametaged novice for the breeder and those despawn after about 20 mins. The current villagers have remained well over 12 hours with constant activity in the area.
Seems like the issue is fixed by making the villager master and adding name tag I currently have all the villagers that i did like this.
For an issue that is this hard to reproduce, I wouldn't take that as evidence that that "fixes" it. We lost several master villagers on our server who had nametags.
I experienced this issue once before in 1.14.[something] where several librarians disappeared inside my sweat shop. Today in 1.15.2 vanilla I noticed a master Fletcher that I had in my zombifying chamber had disappeared (it was safe at the time), along with 1 farmer and 1 mason both inside my potato/carrot farm disappeared. Screenshots added with chunk borders showing.
I can confirm this happening to me on a server. I had just moved some villagers to my house (they were in minecarts in a safe location, no mobs), then I went to get rooms ready. I went back up to get them, they had seemingly despawned, all 7 of them.
1.15.2
This just happened to me in 2 separate villages, at first I thought they were too close together so the first disappearance was them migrating but when it happened to the larger village something had to be wrong. Everyone but the nitwit is gone without a trace. 1.15.2
Can the mojang employees reproducing/fixing this issue please share more of what they've done to attempt to reproduce/fix the bugs so far?
Like disabling villagers from despawning at all, reporting villager despawning with debug reasons, etc.
I know you guys are aware, but giving more info that you tried to do something about this issue would be reassuring.
Mockup debug messages:
(Villager despawned. Reason: No valid village detected.)
(Villager despawned. Reason: No valid village detected.)
(Villager despawned. Reason: No reason.)
I haven't been hit with this bug after transferring my 1.12.2 world directly to 1.15.2, but I didn't stray particularly far away from the village, and I had name-tagged all my villagers too.
Perhaps a method of reproduction could be by going far away to unload the chunks of one single un-nametagged villager in a house filled with villager needs and a jobsite, on Peaceful mode; and returning back to the house to see if anything happens, then reloading the world to just before the trip and repeating it almost-exactly,
Even after upgrading my version to 20w08a, all villagers with a memory are still gone. The only villager I have left is one that just got cured as a zombie villager. Is this the same bug as described above? I'm asking since I saw some posts on Reddit saying the villager bug was fixed in 20w08a, but I'm still having issues.
If you played in 20w07a your villagers are gone forever. Load backup of your world (you are asked to do a backup when loading world in new snapshot).
confirmed for 20w10a (although since it is already confirmed for 20w11a this might not help)
I had a rescued zombie librarian and traded her to level 3, only to have her disappear when I only just turned my back. She was almost right next to me. I broke a couple of bookshelves. Maybe that upset her.
also confirmed for 20w15a, legit had them right next to me and they're gone without anything else–we're talking master level, too.
Happened in 1.15.2, kilometers away from spawn. Single player.
I would also like a bit of reassurance that this is being fixed, but I understand if you are trying you best. Lost a librarian with the best deal ever (Mending for 10 emeralds!), but now she is gone. Makes pretty much the entire village and pillage update useless.
me too; but seemingly only villagers in my rendered area? Theres about 3 that are farther away that are fine. I was also switching between survival and creative, but they were fine the first few times I did that. Iron golems are fine. I've closed and reopened the world a few times, still no villagers. I'm on 1.15.2 with optifine
As of 20w22a, villagers that were hit by a lightning strike and turned into a witch no longer are able to despawn. This might have been another cause for the mysterious villager disappearances.
@violine1101 in some cases it might yes, but in the cases of villagers dissapering from underground it is most likely not.
on my friends server the villagers we cured kept despawning alot to the point where we stopped trying
plz fix in 1.16
Please don't just confirm without describing what happened. If you can reliably reproduce that issue within few hours of new version release, we would really appreciate if you could share your setup.
This has been happening to me too, I went through the effort of getting 2 jungle zombie villagers and healing them, had them both nametagged locked in a well lit room with loads of other villagers and one has disappeared. I also lost 2 villagers after they went through a zombifying machine and I left them sitting in minecarts after curing them. They were cured when I left them so they didnt despawn as zombie villagers. Both villagers disappeared but the minecarts were still there. It seems it may have something to do with cured zombie villagers. Sorry not sure how to reproduce it. Edit they were all well within spawn chunks. Not sure if thats relevant
I'm playing 1.16 rc1 I had one villager from each profession fully trapped in 2block*2block*2block granite rooms. with nothing in them but beds and their profession block. I left them alone for 20 minutes to do some other things in the world. I came back 20ish minutes later(world was set to peaceful so not hostile mobs) they were just gone.
Would you like to share your worldsave or screenshots of villager setup with F3 enabled? Also would be helpfull sharing your render distance and how far from willagers you've been working.
And if the extra log messages about village deaths/removals are still in effect, reporting those, too, if any found in the logs.
For mods, if those log messages are indeed still in effect, might be good to add a mention about reporting them to the issue description, as the knowledge about those has been buried among the comments by now, so "nobody" sees it.
It would most likely also be helpfull of people experiencing this issue to tell what version their world were created in and maby also check if the villagers were next to a chunk border or not.
Has been happening with me too, Villager #1 A Farmer, just disappeared today.
Before this a few days ago, Villager #3 which sold Feather Falling IV and Fire Aspect II
Villager #5 which sold Efficiency V and Fire Aspect II.
-and Villager #6 who sold Protection IV, and after I got those three back.
Villager #22 which sold Channeling & Loyalty III also vanished in thin air.
I play Vanilla without anything else installed on the server, 100% vanilla experience with the family with some who just got into Minecraft, there's been no Villager deaths, they just seems to vanish as if they never existed to begin with.
We play in the latest release, 1.15.2
I hope the cause will be found quickly as it's been a hell getting those Librarian Villagers back, even had to settle with a Efficiency IV the 2nd time as I became demotivated to keep trying to reset the job site over and over again to get Efficiency V back was resetting job sites for over 4 hours uninterrupted.
3 Years playing on my world, 1 month following this bug and scared, and yes, it happened to me now, 3 of my villagers just dissapear, non of them were at the chunk border, no zombies near and they had roof. All librarians with different levels. 1.15.2 vanilla.
I do believe I have just encountered the issue, a villager just disappeared in a completely enclosed village, a farmer just vanished - no error in the console, I did trade with him a significant amount so maybe the inventory corrupted? Unable to do any extensive tests on the world at the moment unfortunately.
Since 1.16.1 older villages I revisited in order to provide enough beds and workstations no longer have any villagers, not missing one or two but all of them. The villages are lit up with a security fence and iron golems but are empty of life except for perhaps one or two children. This has been the case with the last four villages I have revisited. Prior to the nether update this was not happening.
This just happened on my realm, no mods or anything as well. Villagers encased in well lit box, no zombies. All villagers had beds, workstations, had been traded with.
Also having this issue, an entire village of 30+ villagers all leveled for max trades disappeared overnight, children are disappointed that their village project is gone.
[media]@unknown, in your case it's likely that a zombie siege happened: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Zombie_siege
This is happening to me consistently in a village that I painstakingly spent hours and hours securing. Relevant data is that the villagers remained and stayed alive as long as they were secured within their homes - I shuttered them in their homes with fences to prevent escape while I built the wall, terraformed ledges and ponds, etc. They were like this for several in-game days, sometimes with me working through the night, and sometimes with me sleeping in random beds throughout the village.
Today, when I finally released a few of the villages to wander, I saw three of them breed two children. I remained in the chunk, or the one next to it, working on my farm for a few in-game days. When I re-entered the village, all but one of the wandering villagers had disappeared without a trace. No zombies had arrived, and there were no long falls for them to suicide. Perplexed, I further secured the village and released one more villager from his home.
Two in-game days later the original villager (with whom I had traded and should therefore be locked) had disappeared.
What I think is happening is that my village spans the edge of two different L2 maps, which I assume means that it spans multiple chunks. The village bell is in the eastern L2 map, but the villager's bed and work site were both in the western L2 map. I was hanging out in the western L2 map when the villager disappeared. I believe that he had visited the village bell for his usual afternoon socializing, but despawned when he left the map I occupied.
All of this happened on my iphone 7 game, on version 1.16.1. I did exit the app a few times during that play session, so that might also contribute.
I think iPhone would run the bedrock edition (aka pocket edition) of Minecraft; this particular corner of this Jira is for the Java-edition of minecraft...
This is a bug tracker, not a discussion forum. I have removed all irrelevant comments, please move the discussion to the Subreddit or Discord.
Note to everyone: Make sure your villagers didn't just go in a nearby nether portal. This happened to me and I was sure it was this bug, until I went to the nether and saw him there. Deleting all my attachments. Hope this helps
Same Issue, Just started a new world, Java 1.16.3 Spawn is visible to a village (~8 villagers ) . We set up in the village.
Only been playing ~2 hours, had not done any trades at all, logged off. On the next night, we join the game all the villagers are gone without a trace.
I think I maybe seeing this on 1.16.100. Got two villagers, bred them twice, logged off of the Realms server. When rejoining they were all gone. Got two more in a 2x2x3 with two beds under them. Went to sleep and woke up and one was gone. No doors or openings in the enclosure.
Confirmed for 20w51a.
Noticed at night that one of my 4 villagers was stuck on a cliff near the edge of the village (15 blocks higher than the village and 20 blocks to the side of the only 3 houses my hand-made village has so far). Rushed over and built stairs down, which required taking my eye off the villager for literally 10 seconds. When I looked back up he wasn't there. He was unable to climb UP any further, so down my staircase was the only way he could've gone. I know a zombie didn't kill him because I have a loot table which causes villagers to drop meat and bones upon death. Checked the village beds just in case the bug was "villager teleports to bed" but no that wasn't what happened.
He was literally standing within 5 blocks of me horizontally and 10 blocks vertically, and I only took my eyes off him for 10 seconds. Villager despawn confirmed!
Given the height difference he may not have considered himself part of the village anymore (although it's considered a valid place to wander to during the day). Also there was no log off involved.
EDIT: to be clear I had 4 villagers in total and the other 3 were unaffected. Also it was the oldest of the 4.
This issue appears to be happening again on 1.16.4. We're running a small Paper server and we've been able to recreate the issue with different players in different worlds (both 'normal' world/nether/end & resource world/nether/end, https://www.spigotmc.org/resources/%E2%9C%85-resource-world-%E2%9C%85-never-run-out-of-resources-must-have.75994 ) There appear to be two triggers:
When a player 'rescues' a zombie villager (through the process of throwing a potion of weakness, throwing a golden apple, and waiting the allotted time for the villager entity to change from zombie --> normal ). Immediately as the last tick happens which changes the zombie villager state from zombie --> no-zombie, the villager disappears. This has happened to 5+ players regardless of OS system (Win/OSX/Linux) or mod status on the server.
When a player attempts to trade with a villager enough that it would prompt the villager to 'level up' from Copper --> Silver. I have not seen the error happen with silver–>gold or any of the higher leveled villagers. This (also) has happened to 5+ players regardless of OS system (Win/OSX/Linux) or mod status on the server.
I'll include some of the console logs that have been pulled from our server in case the breadcrumbs of the error show something that I'm missing.
To be clear, neither of the triggers mentioned by H B were observed to be causes way back when I observed this problem. No player ever was observing a villager and witnessed it ceasing to be. Your issue may be unrelated.
@unknown, since paper is a mod we cannot provide support for it here. It's likely that your issue is caused by paper / spigot.
@unknown this is the java tracker. If this is happening on bedrock go over to the tracker here
I've had a villager blink out of existence while it was standing in front of me, and I know I commented on it, but I don't remember which of many duplicate threads I was in. It's possible that I was experiencing client-server lag and that the villager went somewhere else to despawn without me being able to see.
I have had several villagers ,that I was trading with at master level, despawn from my villiage and it continues to happen. Also my donkeys I had in this same village with saddles and chest full off cobblestone have despawned. This is on a Bedrock realm.
@Jacki Merrick For Bedrock Edition, see MCPE-21416
I am playing Minecraft Java 1.16.5 in a Realm. Only half of my villagers disappeared.
I had 7 villagers in a (closed off, well lit) room with beds, 5 of them had jobs and had been traded with. I had 6 more villagers with jobs in a separate area who were all in 1x1 spaces on top of honey blocks, with job blocks in front of them but no beds nearby. I logged on after not playing for a day after a week of playing daily and the 7 villagers in a room had vanished. The other 6 were fine.
I'm not sure if the 7 disappeared because they were roaming free (instead of in a 1x1) or because their room had beds. The only other difference I can think of between the two groups was that the 7 were held in a room with iron doors in a sort of airlock while the 6 were in a house with wood doors.
No other mobs have vanished (we have horses, donkeys, wolves, etc.) just those 7 villagers.
I am playing on a vanilla Java 1.16.5 server. All 16 of my villagers (and an iron golem) disappeared. They were all in the same room as Aimee said. However, in my case all of the beds are permanently marked as occupied even during daytime.
I have had to replace my mending villager on 5 separate occasions because of this. Please fix the bug
I also play on bedrock so this issue is on that version too,
One thing I would like to add is that my villagers only start despawning when there are more than two of them. Has this happened to anyone else?
My post was marked as a duplicate, so I'm just going to comment here. Other comments show that villagers sometimes disappear, on my realm villagers are constantly gone. Even after curing, they vanish right as they become cured. There is no time between curing and gone at all. It's like there's a command block constantly killing villagers. Mojang, this is a game breaking issue, and should be at least mildly concerning.
@Eclipse That seems like a separate issue - possibly a problem with Realms's custom server software.
@MMK21 The moderators have determined that Eclipse's issue (MC-229064) is, in fact, a duplicate of this issue.
@unknown having a world where it could be reproduced would be extremely helpful.
Though since it happens immediately, I suspect that in Realms' "World options" screen "Spawn NPCs" option is turned off - this causes any villager to be removed.
If it isn't the case, could you check if this behaves the same when running downloaded backup locally?
@Fabian Roling
Yes, i know, but i just wanted to let the mods know the bug is on bedrock too. Just because im playing on bedrock doesnt mean it doesn't matter. The bug is on both editions and should be fixed on both.
I was about to suggest reporting it for MCBE then, but actually that was already done: MCPE-21416
You can vote for it and confirm it for versions there.
I'm glad to see this is re-opened. Please contact me if additional world files are needed.
We have a realm where this issue appears to affect one village and not another. The villages are in similar biomes with similar geography, nothing too extreme. One that has the problem spawned before the issue was reported resolved (prior to this being re-opened) and another after, so we conjecture that the issue may be related to saved chunk data/format. In any case the only thing that seems to affect this (the only control we seem able to exert) with the bugged village is that if we can keep villagers within a certain radius of the player (exact distance unknown) they tend to remain spawned; and if the player wanders away from them, and returns, we tend to observe what we have taken to calling 'an event' where as much as 50% of the villagers may have de-spawned without a known cause.
We have also watched non-villager mobs spawning rapidly (as often as 8 times per in-game day) and then walking a short distance (10 blocks or fewer) and de-spawning at what appears to be a chunk boundary. Approaching the boundary does not seem to cause the de-spawned mob to re-appear, but does often trigger another mod spawning at the opposite edge of the same chunk. (I realize this may conflate 2 separate spawning-related issues. I'm happy to add this as appropriate to another open issue that may be relevant.
These issues occur on Realms and so they apply to the most recent release of Bedrock as of this date.
I noticed I had lost a villager in a village I haven't even been to since 1.17.1. Playing on a 1.18.2 vanilla server currently.
The region of the village was briefly loaded due to MC-98153 when going to or returning from the nether. The server created an entities file for this region and updated the poi and region files. This has happened with other regions as well, but this is the first time a villager vanished (replacing the affected files from the backup brought him back). There was nothing in the server or client logs.
Whether or not MC-98153 is the root cause is unclear, but it was at least the trigger in this case. Commented on there as well.
Please contact me if you need the world downloads (before and after it happened) - they're big, so I might have to strip them down first. Not sure if it would help, though, as I have done the same as today for quite some time and only today the issue happened, so it seems pretty sporadic.
I had the same issue as described before again and there seems to be a pattern. It might not be related to MC-98153. This time a whole village has been wiped out.
I have been working in the Nether and some nearby chunks with portals were loaded. I assume a piglin or it's zombified variant spawned close by and walked into the portal. The portals are in enclosed rooms with doors, but piglins can open doors and zombified ones can spawn in portals.
When (if that is what happened) they entered the portal, they caused the counterpart in the overworld to be loaded, but then probably instantly despawned because no player was around there. These regions were in villages and last loaded in 1.17.1 - the issue happened in 1.18.2. So upon loading this overworld region, the game attempts to convert the affected chunks, which you can see that the new caves are generated below zero (but only in a few chunks, not as much as you'd expect), and sometimes also a file in the entities/ folder if it didn't exist yet, otherwise it shows as changed.
My guess is that the chunks weren't loaded long enough for the conversion to be successfully completed (because the mob despawned), thus letting villagers (and potentially other mobs) disappear.
Not sure if this is a separate issue - if necessary, I can create an own bug report for this. I can also provide the world with and without the issue (I restored the affected entities/poi/region files from a backup), but the worlds are big and in principle this should happen to any 1.17.1 world with a portal in a village where a (hostile?) mob enters the portal in the nether in 1.18.2 without a player being in the overworld - probably not every time, though.
A couple of players have been able to reproduce this on 1.19 on my server, and I wasn't able to find villager death messages in my logs.
@unknown This bug has no known reproduction steps. Would you mind sharing how exactly did you confirm this?
It seems this issue has not been tracked much in 1.20 but is still open and its duplicates resolved. And it does not affect the patch 23w35a and the 1.20.2 per-release 1. (to my knowledge) Is the issue suppost to still be open?
If anyone is still having this issue could you please name your villagers and periodically check your logs? After barricading all but 3 of my villagers inside their houses and then naming the 3 still left free to roam around, I discovered how my villagers were disappearing. My villagers were not dispawning. My sad discovery is detailed in MC-265023.
My villagers, iron golems, farm animals, tamed dogs, horses, and item frames all disappear. I originally thought they disappeared because of unloaded chunks so I named them-but they disappeared too. I connected some dots and found that they only disappeared after a restart.
