Disappearing villagers

I was playing in my minecraft survival world with one of my friends. I went to explore the world while my friend was back at the base trying to breed villagers. A  little bit later he tells me that the vilagers we have in a closed in  trading hall has disappeared. There is no way for mobs to get in and they have beds and work benches. Why did they disappear??
