Low fps

On the old version (1.5.2) I was getting a steady 60fps on creative, survival and adventure mode which is the fps I usually receive. Now I have updated to 1.6.1 and I load in to my minecraft worlds instead of getting a nice steady 60fps I am getting a very laggy 20fps and sometimes down to 12fps.
