It's pretty easy to explain.
While using the old launcher, 1.5.1 was at a very convenient FPS of about 150. However, using the new launcher cut my FPS down to about 20 in regular worlds, while on flatlands it levelled at 35.
I can see a connection here. The new launcher closes itself and opens a new window, while the old launcher didn't. It seems that by opening a new window, the gameplay is slowed down a lot. This has occurred with the Feed the Beast modpack as well as MagicLauncher, which both have launchers that close after launch and open a new window to play Minecraft in.
This is really inconvenient and I don't want to play Minecraft where by pressing F5 twice, my FPS will drop to 5.
EDIT: Somehow it got fixed. Or maybe Mojang did something that fixed it, now getting a 200 FPS on flatlands. Thanks version 0.2!

I've got the same problem. I generated a new world in 1.5.1, fps is around 90. Opening the same world in 13w16a starts with a fps of about 30 but quickly drops to almost 10.
When I compare the pie chart you see with shift+F3, root.gameRenderer.level.terrain takes up the majority of the time (from 30% to about 72%). Changing graphics settings didn't seem to change much, even on fast graphics it eventually drops to 10 fps.
I've got a GTX 660M, Win 8, 1 GB memory assigned.
Added two comparison screenshots
Dammit, my laptop was using integrated graphics instead of my Nvidia card π. My problem is fixed!
Cannot fully replicate. I cleaned my entire .minecraft folder and used the same settings on both the new and old launcher, there was only about 6 fps loss (from 36 fps to 30 fps).
Can you check whether your problem is the same as Devroush's and whether the new launcher is using integrated graphics or your nVidia card? My 30-36 fps comes from integrated graphics.
I checked my nVidia card settings and I am not playing on Integrated settings. Whilst playing in a jungle on all three settings, I get about the same FPS each time. However, the root.gameRenderer.level.terrain started at about 62% and rose up slowly to 65%. Settings were on fast, no smooth lighting, with vSync and Advanced OpenGL on.
I checked this too and however I did somehow ran MC through integrated graphics, changing this to my nVidia card didn't change anything.
Changing settings around didn't help either. Just a very minor improvement by switching the render distance to tiny. Barely noticeable, though..
Are all the people who are experiencing problems running laptops? from what it seems that is indeed the case.
Can you check your snooper stats (Options -> Snooper Settings (bottom right)) and scroll all the way to the bottom, please screenshot that and attach it to this ticket.
Indeed, from running MC on a laptop.
Minecraft is running with your integrated graphics card. If you right click MinecraftDev.exe, do you have an option "run with graphics processor" > "High performance NVIDIA processor"? That worked for me. You'll see NVIDIA Corporation as opengl_vendor in the snooper settings if it worked.
(BTW, you could also try this for modpacks like Feed The Beast)
It's weird.. I did change that. I'm sure I did and it didn't seem to make a difference.
Hmmmm, well.. Maybe I didn't do something right. Everything is back to normal now.. 180+ FPS now.. Thanks for the help! π
Used to get 80, now get 15, running dedicated graphics on both, have made sure to set it in he control centre
I found minecraft to go anywhere from 40 fps to 7. Allocated memory is reduced, too. it was 50, now 34. What does playing on a laptop or with integrated graphics do with this? (humor me cause I know little about computers) π

Is this still a concern in the current Minecraft version? If so, please update the affected versions in order to best aid Mojang ensuring bugs are still valid in the latest releases/pre-releases.
For me it's the other way around, my fps is fine in the snapshots from the new launcher but when I use 1.5.1 from the new launcher my fps is 7 or 8.
Still a problem with 1.5.2 on new launcher, ranged from 95-110 looking up, and 5-10 or 15 looking straight or down. Very low fps. never got this low before.
I found a weird trick to get your fps up for a few minutes. It might not work for everyone. I found that if you go into the video settings while playing and change from your current render setting to it again (clicking through all others) it will pop your fps up to around 30 or so for a while. I was using "max fps" setting and "far" render distance.
The problem is still there, on the left side of the screenshot i'm using the old launcher, on the right side the new launcher. In both Launchers im using 1.5.2 on the same world/position.

@Manuel: Please force a crash by pressing F3 + C for 10 seconds while ingame (old and new launcher) and attach the crash reports here.I suspect MCL-225 here...

What is your FPS in 1.5.2 without MCPatcher ?
About 70 fps with old launcher
I don't know if this will solve anyone's problem but I have been having a very similar issue to this and found a solution.
Using the old vanilla launcher I was getting between 70 and 80FPS normally but as soon as I switched to the snapshot's launcher that dropped to about 10FPS. After doing a lot of Google-Fu I was able to nail down the issue. Here's a link to the solution as posted on the Tekkit forum (the solution is actually for the "Magic Launcher" and Tekkit launcher β which were both also causing the same issue for me)
http://forums.technicpack.net/threads/low-fps-in-tekkit.12688/#post-97541
Basically, on certain Nvidia GPUs/Drivers (and on certain laptops in particular) the old launcher was able to get minecraft to run on the correct GPU, however, the new launcher (and the Magic Launcher/Tekkit launcher) break down and use the onboard GPU.
I suggest checking out the above post and, if applicable, trying to manually set things up so that java processes are shipped off to the correct GPU. Doing so fixed my problems with the new launcher beautifully.

@Evan Stern et al: See also MCL-225
still in new launcher 0.8.x, 0.9, and minercaft 13w21a-13w23b. And MCL-225 is not the problem as my crash-reports are showing
and for launcher 0.9, why is this still resolved? the bug is still there!
It is resolved. You just didn't read the comments:
You are playing on a laptop with two videocards. Your system picks the wrong one. Teach it to pick the right one.
Sofar there is no way for us (Mojang) to do this selection and it works different on all operating systems. If you find a documented way to do this videocard selection feel free to let us know.
For OSX use GfxStatus, for windows add either java.exe or javaw.exe to the list of progams wanting to use the discrete gpu. (The 'how' may depend on your videocard vendor and driver-version)
thats not the problem (as my crash-reports are showing), because i always used the slower grapchics card (so my laptop doesn't overheat). And about the crash-reports: i started both launcher with minecraft 1.5.2, and with the new launcher it was slower, but both are using the same graphics card.
That's not true as without the fast GPU I get 5 rather than 20 (I used to get 60 and more) I mean this isn't an issue for me anymore as I now own a desktop, is there a way to unsubscribe?

Click on Stop watching this issue
How would I find what video card I have, or what my Minecraft is using? And how would I find out what the other one is?
That raises another question. Why did the old launcher pick the right one but now the new one can't?
We have no control over this, it's something up to the OS/drivers and everything does it differently.
Eventually the driver-makers will figure out what register in their custom systems and it should start working again. Or you can complain with them and make them do it faster π
You said that my issue (MC-19396) is like this one but it's not! I don't have a laptop, and my launcher is always stuck and sends error messages!
I do not believe it is the new launcher, but rather 1.6. I am experiencing the same issue but it occurs in 1.6 only, not 1.5.2 where I can play in max settings efficiently.
Same for me, but 1.5.2 has the old launcher and i have problems since 0.9.5 launcher update, before that i could play in 1.6 snapshots.
I have issues with my integrated graphics. It worked fine before. (40+ FPS)
But now its just unplayable. (5-8 FPS)
I do not have any other Cards. So maybe its not only an issue with dedicated cards?
Same here, only use the Intel HD graphics 4000, before worked well (40-60fps) now 15-20 fps
I have the exact same problem. Ran 1.5.2 with the old launcher at 60-150FPS (On highest settings), now I'm down to 10-25 (On lowest settings.) Dinnerbone said to switch to dedicated graphics; however, the majority of laptops only have integrated. Surely the game hasn't changed so much that it's no longer playable for many of us? Thank you kindly.
I have same problem and everyone just tells me to run minecraft with my dedicated graphics card (don't have one o.o) then i tell them my system only has a integerated graphics card and i get no reply back? is this gonna be fixed.....
I think it's a bit surprising. Mojang has a reputation for fantastic customer service. But, much like other people, the only answer to this large problem is "use dedicated graphics." Which, for many of us with laptops, may as well be "get a new computer." I don't see how it isn't fixable. The only change to the game was adding horses and a few blocks. How does that cause a 90% FPS decrease? I hope it does get fixed soon.
I recently got a new pc w/ integrated graphics, worked great for a month with 1.5, update to 1.6.1 and BAM INSTANT LAG WTF? FIX THE LAUNCHER!!!
The launcher, actually, isn't causing the lag. I think it's A: The dependency on the launcher, or B: The new Resource Pack system.
This samething happen to me. and it is sill in minecraft 1.6.2! This is very bad for laptops with out a dedicated graphics card!
That's true @Manuel
My laptop has a nvidia geforce graphic card and still slow. (from 1.5.2 to 1.6.x)
Try going to snooper settings and scroll down to opengl vendor and check what is listed there.
I'm still having lag, and this issue is labeled resolved..
Why is mojang lying to us?
It's resolved as "Invalid", in other words they don't seem to give a damn about this issue, and it's considerably important.
Don't worry. Just use Optifine for the time being until they find a real solution.
One of them said that it uses the crappy integrated graphics instead of the gaming graphics, and I don't understand how this could have changed over one update.
I'm using optifine for 1.6.2 and I didn't even get an fps increase.
Gabe: It's invalid because it's not the fault of Minecraft itself, not because no one cares about it.
I see, my bad, but couldn't they just move it?
I have been looking around on my computer and I have found I on my computer I only have one graphics card. I also, just to make sure my theory was right, compared some crash reports from before the new launcher to some after (one was today, I forced a crash for this) and both use the same graphics card I believe (Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 GL version 4.0.0 - Build 9.17.10.2817). This means, unless my graphics card has 2 graphics processing units (which I bet it doesn't), the reduced FPS is because of Minecraft, or something Minecraft is doing. Maybe it is relying on the GPU a lot more with the new launcher and our Integrated cards can't handle it, or there is something about Minecraft that has been made or set up (maybe accidently) so that it works better with a dedicated or non-integrated graphics card. But we can say that generally the FPS drop is NOT because of the copmuter picking the wrong graphics card. It is because of Minecraft in someway.
@Jed Harvey I one-hundred percent agree with you! I have the same exact graphics card and it was fine before... something must have changed as a result of the new launcher. Its definitely causing FPS problems for people with Intel(R) HD 4000 graphics cards. But I even watched a video by Xisuma and Keralis (YouTubers) and they said they both have had random FPS drops. They don't have it as bad as us, but I'm positive they don't use the Intel(R) HD 4000 graphics card.
Do you have any other graphics cards? As in non-integrated ones?
No, just the one, non-integrated card.
My Intel HD 4000 is an integrated card. I don't know about your system but yours is probably an integrated card also. But this is proof that it is at least partly Minecraft's fault. And also it is probably something that can be fixed.
this is a duplicate and this is not solve yet.
look at this post https://mojang.atlassian.net/browse/MCL-767
Manuel: This ticket was created 1 month before MCL-767, and both are already linked as related tickets, not a duplicates.

This ticket is about computer having two graphic cards: One integrated crappy Intel GFX and one usable AMD or ATI GFX, whereas MCL-767 is about having only Intel graphics.
I did some testing with 1.5.2 and I conclude that it is the new version of LWJGL that is creating a significant framerate drop. Using the old LWJGL 2.4.2, I am able to achieve up to 720 FPS on the snooper settings menu screen. However using the new 2.9.0, I can only receive a maximum of 272 FPS.
Both tests were conducted using MInecraft 1.5.2 with the old launcher. The LWJGL version being is the dependant variable. Since Minecraft 1.6 uses the newest version of LWJGL, I believe this is the primary reason of such a great loss of framerate.
ALLELUIA! Results! So LWGJL is the guilty one.

Using the old LWJGL 2.4.2, I am able to achieve up to 720 FPS on the snooper settings menu screen. However using the new 2.9.0, I can only receive a maximum of 272 FPS.
That's ridiculous and a pointless test.
It's not a pointless test, Kumasasa. Even if the new libraries are required some of us don't have very fast computers and need to downgrade.

Gabe V, you want to tell us that 720 resp. 272 FPS have :any meaning ? Nobody has 720 FPS ingame.
Look here, Kumasasa. While ingame, it is difficult to obtain an accurate framerate, on menu screens, framerates are almost always the same, that is why it is good to test performance on them. This is merely a way to get an idea of the performance status. I am providing this as a resource, for those who want some answers, if you do not want to know about it, you can simply ignore it, there is no need for such a reply.
@Kumasasa Nobody needs that amount but a constant framerate that drops rather proves their point.
I'm sorry, but I do not think anyone here knows (and has the ability) to benchmark Minecraft properly.
Even with modifications I did to to Minecraft to specifically remove some of the issues you are all overlooking it is far from an accurate science.
Keep in mind some things:
You cannot run 1.6.2 with lwjgl2.4.2 without modifications of 1.6.2
1.5.2 and 1.6.2 run in a different way, one parents the ogl view onto a Canvas the other spawns a native window (which means you cannot do an objective comparison)
You cannot any fps readings and compare them if; You have:
pending chunkupdates
entities
changing time
Feel free to keep benchmarking, just keep in mind that whatever numbers you are spitting out are tainted π
I don't know if its the same issue but it sounds the same every time i "try" to play minecraft i get massive lag in flatlands and even vanilla.
@Jordan Davis This issue was resolved about a month ago. π
apparently its not fixed because flatlands still don't work π
Well "Flatlands" is a mod... if I just researched correctly... and you can never know with mods. Mods aren't Mojang's problem. But with vanilla... I don't know why it would lag for you. This bug involved certain Windows users to have FPS decreases of down to 70% AFTER being logged on for 40-60 seconds. I think you might be on the wrong page. If this isn't your bug, good luck searching.
Jordan: This was marked as Invalid, not Fixed. Use the Mojang Support Center instead.
Bailey: Flatland has been a vanilla world type since Minecraft 1.1.
thank you for the help GrygarFlzr. and Bailey B you really need to get your research because mine was dead spot on flatlands was added in the game for a while i don't know when but the mod before me confirms it maybe you should get your research right so you wont look like a idiot friend. XD XP π π

@Jordan Davis: Watch your words.
Yes sir
@GrygrFlzr: The term is generally called "Superflat", as it says on the game as an option for generating a world... I figured he was talking about a mod or some other add-on to the game. Also, the problem was fixed, but not "Fixed". I didn't have to change any settings to fix anything, I guess something in one of the launcher updates improved the FPS problem. π
@Bailey B superflats and Flatlands is basically the same term for the world type in minecraft.

@Bailey B, how can it be fixed but not "Fixed" yet you don't have the problem anymore?
@ Ezekiel lol i was thinking the same thing XD i think it was fixed but not fixed but also fixed when it was not fixed but wasn't fixed 0_0 i'm confused.
@Ezekiel: The "Resolution" section says "Invalid", but yet everyone I know who had that problem are no longer having it anymore. The problem was linked to the launcher version 1.1.1, if I remember correctly. The version after that (whichever it was) seemed to have fixed it. Yet, on this issue, it is still marked as "Invalid". All the mods here do not have that problem, so they don't seem to believe in it. So therefore, it is fixed in the game, but claimed by @GrygrFlzr as, "not Fixed." (in other words; Invalid) because mods simply cannot recreate the FPS drops in this issue. But anyways, this issue is no longer occurring for those whom had it before.

Marking this as fixed, citing

as the reason. I for one know this was at one point an issue for the launcher, so therefor if it is no longer occurring for the people experiencing it, it is fixed.
Ah, thank you for doing that. π
you can close the launcher, the game willl be still running
@Voicescu Robert: The game already does that automatically.
This issue is back again. I used to have 300 - 400 fps. With the latest launcher update I get 30 fps and my gpu doesn't get recognized even tho it used to. I have no idea how to reopen this but this issue is defenetly back with the latest launcher update.
Regards
CitrioN
I still have this issue or possibly a slightly different but same result issue. on my nVidia Geforce 320m integrated with 256 MB shared memory. In 1.5.2, I had over 100 FPS with far render distance. Now I can hardly achieve 50 FPS at 8 chunks (normal render distance). I had suspected it was a LWJGL incompatibility issue.
I can't get it working on my Notebook with an Nvidia GTX 675M and Windows 8.1.
The Minecraft Profile is created and set to use the GPU, the notification icon shows that a process is using the GPU, but the snooper settings inside Minecraft say that the Intel OpenGL Driver is used.
Maybe this "new" functionallity to say the driver to use the GPU would help:

Just saw that our good friend MD-5 created a pull-request for LWGL which does this:
https://github.com/md-5/lwjgl/commit/e503ea631c1e14e414352b3a69eac7e50b3d11d3
And this was merged into LWJGL 2.9.2:
2014-12-14 Ioannis Tsakpinis
: Merge pull request #104 from md-5/patch-1 Force high performance GPU for Nvidia Optimus systems
So could you please update to latest LWJGL version? THX
